Highlights

Remnant 2 includes several references and nods to the first game and its prequels, catering to lore-loving fans who paid attention to the story and NPCs.

Mud Tooth and Brabus are present in Ward 13 as a reference to their roles in the previous game, where players had the opportunity to interact with them and make decisions that impacted their fates. The inclusion of specific elements and items, like Mud Tooth's Stew and the SMG MP60 R, from Remnant: From the Ashes in Remnant 2, establishes a connection between the two games and suggests a shared universe.

Not many people paid close attention to the story and connections between NPCs in the first Remnant game, also known as Remnant: From the Ashes. However, those who did know that Remnant 2, along with its prequel games (Chronos and R: FtA), delves into a world rich with complex lore, intriguing concepts, and memorable NPCs. Luckily, Remnant 2 pays homage to these dedicated fans by including various subtle references and nods to previous creations by Gunfire Games. Let's explore some of the noteworthy examples.

7 Mud Tooth & Brabus In Ward 13

In Ward 13, players are given the opportunity to interact with the various NPCs residing in this settlement. These NPCs have different roles, with some having brief lines of dialogue and others, particularly the merchants, engaging in deeper conversations. Mud Tooth and Brabus are notable examples of the latter group. However, only those familiar with the first game will truly appreciate their appearance in Ward 13.

In Remnant: From the Ashes, Mud Tooth was a beloved NPC that players could encounter in their randomized version of Earth, although he didn't always appear. On the other hand, Brabus served as a potential Dungeon Boss and players could choose to fight him or engage in peaceful interactions. The side quests offered by these NPCs had multiple endings, with the most favorable outcome involving obtaining the Pocket Watch quest item from Mud Tooth and then giving it to Brabus instead of fighting him. In the end, this choice led to Brabus reconciling with Mud Tooth, dissolving the Mud Dogs, and settling down in Ward 13.

6 Dr. Norah's Journal Entry About Mud Tooth's Stew

When it comes to Mudtooth, he not only plays a crucial role in acquiring the Bandit Set in Remnant: From the Ashes, but he also serves as an exceptional NPC Merchant. Mudtooth graciously offers players his stew every time they visit him, along with captivating stories to accompany it. By exploring his shop, players can find these Stews and Tonic Concotions available for purchase. Consuming either of these items provides a significant boost to the player's Health or Stamina for an entire hour, even after death, making it a formidable meal.

While exploring Ward 13 for hidden treasures in Remnant 2, players will likely stumble upon the Journal of Dr. Norah. This journal is found inside her makeshift clinic, housed within a shipping container. Among various entries, one is entirely dedicated to Mudtooth's Stew. Dr. Norah describes how those who partake in the stew often seek her assistance in calming their racing heart or soothing their upset stomach, but her attempts to alleviate these symptoms prove futile. It seems that the effects of this stew defy normality.

5 Root Rot Being Incredibly Annoying & Semi-Permanent

Remnant 2: Uncovering the Ultimate Easter Eggs for Die-Hard Fans

Players familiar with Remnant: From the Ashes, particularly those who have played through the Earth realm, will undoubtedly be familiar with the Status Effect known as Root Rot. Root enemies are the culprits behind this affliction, often leaving behind a pinkish mist upon their demise. The primary consequence of Root Rot is that the player character is incessantly interrupted by a coughing animation, significantly disrupting their actions. While Root Rot is not as lethal as other Status Effects like Burning or Overloaded, it is undeniably the most aggravating since it can only be remedied with a Consumable or by visiting a Worldstone, making the process quite tedious.

Recalling the tutorial where Cass is discovered to have Root Rot, players well-versed in Remnant: From the Ashes may have already noticed this ailment long before it was pointed out by Bo. Cass struggled to walk even a short distance or speak without being plagued by coughing fits. Additionally, consider why Cass has endured Root Rot for such an extended period. In the game, when player characters contract Root Rot, it persists until they either treat it with Oilskin Balm or succumb to death. However, since only the Traveler, the Wanderer, Commander Ford, and perhaps Clementine possess the ability to respawn at Worldstones, this method of curing Root Rot is not accessible to anyone else.

4 The Hub Area SMG MP60 R

Both Remnant 2 and Remnant: From the Ashes offer an abundance of firearms for players to acquire. These weapons can be obtained by defeating bosses, uncovering hidden secrets, or discovering them in treasure chests. Surprisingly, one of the best early-game gun options is conveniently located in the hub area. In Remnant: From the Ashes, players can easily obtain an SMG Hand Gun by venturing into the lab beneath Ward 13. By navigating through the lab and solving a few puzzles along the way, players can open a locked door and discover the SMG inside.

Interestingly, the same SMG (referred to as the MP60 R in Remnant 2, while called the Submachine Gun in R: FtA) can also be found in Ward 13 in Remnant 2. This time, however, the process is much simpler. Players need only use the code found on the bottom of their flashlight to unlock Ford's chest in his room. With the key in hand, they can then unlock the door in the ship located at the far end of the Ward 13 map. Inside this room, they will find the SMG, indicating that the player character 'Wanderer' from the first game had hidden it in the hub area, hoping that their successor would stumble upon it during their exploration, just as they had done initially.

3 The Steady Progress Of Yaesha's Root Invasion

Remnant 2: Uncovering the Ultimate Easter Eggs for Die-Hard Fans

The only true world of Remnant 2 that players have encountered in Remnant: From the Ashes is Yaesha. Yaesha is a dense, forest-like world inhabited by a species known as the Pan. Interestingly, Yaesha is the only world that appears in all three games, besides Earth, of course. In Chronos: Before the Ashes, the player character actually defeats the Guardian of Yaesha a month before the events of R: FtA, therefore exposing the world to an invasion by the Root.

In R: FtA, Yaesha is where the Wanderer finally reunites with Commander Ford and discovers that the Root has infiltrated the realm. It appears that the Root had been sending an "advanced scouting party" prior to the full invasion. However, Yaesha has undergone significant changes in Remnant 2. Instead of the previous general blue-ish color scheme, Yaesha is now tinted red (even outside of the Blood Moon event) and is heavily infested with the Root. Additionally, the Ravager, which players either defeated or spared in the first game, has now become infected by the Root, leading Yaesha on a path towards destruction.

2 The Moving Pan Statues In Yaesha

Remnant 2: Uncovering the Ultimate Easter Eggs for Die-Hard Fans

Surprisingly, the next reference is believed to only be related to the iconic Weeping Angels from Doctor Who. It involves the moving Pan statues that can be found in the Chimney area of Yaesha during one of the events. Within this area, players may come across a small group of stone formations amidst the Root-infested terrain. If lucky, they will discover an outcropping with four Pan statues arranged in a square formation. By shooting the brightly shining gems on the faces of all the statues, an elevator will be revealed, leading downwards.

Obtain the Lithic Signet Ring from this location and begin making your way out. Players should be prepared to hear a noise behind them and must quickly turn around to witness a Pan Statue that has mysteriously moved and is slowly approaching them from behind. Although this is also a nod to the Weeping Angels, it primarily serves as a reference to the prequel game of the franchise, Chronos: Before the Ashes. In this game, players encounter these same statues while exploring Yaesha. While it is possible to defeat these statues, it requires fast reflexes or a skilled co-op partner at the very least.

1 Who Clementine Is & Why The Keeper Is Drawn To Her

Remnant 2: Uncovering the Ultimate Easter Eggs for Die-Hard Fans

Starting from the content:

Newcomers to Remnant 2 may find themselves perplexed by the presence of an enigmatic figure named Clementine in Ward 13, as well as the significance attributed to her by those around her. They may also struggle to grasp the concepts of Dreamers, Guardians, and Wallace's ability to glimpse the future.

On the other hand, experienced Remnant: From the Ashes players who have completed the Subject 2923 DLC set in Reisum are already well-acquainted with Clementine, her extraordinary feats, and her deep sense of disconnection from others. These players will easily identify the parallels between the Keeper's fascination with Clementine and the Guardian of Reisum known as 'Fuzzy' being drawn to her. As a Dreamer who endured centuries of human torment, it comes as no surprise that Clementine feels such a profound detachment from the rest of Ward 13.

Remnant 2 is now available on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC
