In Canton, Ohio, amidst the statues of renowned sports icons such as Super Bowl-winning quarterbacks and influential coaches, proudly stands a vibrant blue and gold jersey adorned with the number 17 on its back.
While the name on the jersey might not ring a bell for many, Puka Nacua has remarkably secured his place in the esteemed Pro Football Hall of Fame despite his relatively short time in the NFL.
Nacua's jersey has earned its place in the esteemed realm of football greatness and excellence, owing to his unprecedented start to his NFL rookie season. Despite being drafted in the fifth round by the Los Angeles Rams this year, with minimal fanfare, Nacua has surpassed all expectations with a string of remarkable and impactful displays on the field.
In Week 5 of the 2023 season, the 22-year-old's jersey was honored at the Pro Football Hall of Fame in recognition of his exceptional performance. During the game, he made an impressive seven catches for 71 yards, including a touchdown. This remarkable achievement led to his induction into the Hall of Fame, where he was celebrated for smashing multiple records. Notably, he set a new benchmark for rookies, amassing an impressive 46 receptions and 572 receiving yards within his first five games.
Nacua is on track to surpass Jaylen Waddle's NFL record for receptions by a rookie, as the Rams wide receiver consistently establishes new milestones each week. This accomplishment holds even greater significance for the relatively unknown player from Utah.

Holy cow, this guys special
football has always been a part of Nacua's life. With three older brothers who played at Brigham Young University (BYU), it was only natural for him to consider transferring to his hometown university after facing disappointment at the University of Washington. Dealing with a broken foot and minimal playing time from the bench, the decision was an easy one for Nacua.
Fesi Sitake, the wide receiver coach and passing game coordinator at BYU, has a vivid memory of his first encounter with Nacua.
"I recall the first high school game I watched him play. I witnessed him make one of the most impressive catches of his high school career, and he definitely had many of them," Sitake shared with CNN Sport.
This guy is truly special. As we built our relationship during the recruitment process, it became clear that his genuine, cheerful, and grateful nature reflected who he truly was. He deeply enjoyed life and had a passion for football. Not only that, he possessed remarkable intelligence and natural talent in his position, while also being a warm-hearted individual. After Nacau returned home to Utah, Sitake recalls his commitment to learning and growing at BYU.
According to Sitake, Nacua's physical abilities can be described as a combination of gracefulness, like a "gazelle", and strength, like a powerful breed of horse known as the Clydesdale, which originated in Scotland and was primarily used for agricultural purposes. Teaming up with quarterback Jaren Hall, who was also selected in the fifth round of this year's draft by the Minnesota Vikings, Nacua evolved into a versatile offensive threat. While his catching skills continued to improve, it was his remarkable physical attributes that made him truly stand out.
Nacua's performance at BYU was impressive, with 91 passes caught for 1,430 yards and 11 touchdowns in 21 games. Notably, he achieved over 100 receiving yards in seven games. Despite facing injuries towards the end of his final year, Nacua still managed to lead the Cougars in both statistics throughout his two years at the university. However, what truly set him apart was his remarkable talent for making crucial catches during critical moments.
Sitake points out last year's clash between BYU and Boise State as a defining moment that showcases Nacua's prowess as both a player and an individual.
Despite BYU being in a trailing position with less than a minute left, Nacua's remarkable acrobatic catch resulted in a game-winning play. Not only did this secure victory for the team, but it also brought an end to a troublesome four-game losing streak that Sitake likened to a "persistent gloom hanging over our program."

Sitake recalls the exhilaration of experiencing the energy on the sideline and witnessing the sense of relief amongst the team. It was a moment that held symbolic significance, as it signified the burden being lifted off their shoulders. Puka, in particular, displayed pure joy, not for his own sake, but because he understood the team's collective desire for this achievement and the challenges they had overcome together.
"I vividly recall wrapping my arm around him and engaging in a profound conversation, affirming his identity by stating: 'That's your essence, my friend. Whenever someone needs assistance, they turn to you.' Consider this merely a glimpse into what lies ahead in your life.
"Ultimately, we concluded the season triumphantly with four consecutive victories, and Puka played a pivotal role in that success...he persevered wholeheartedly during the challenging four-game period."
"He was still smiling, he was still laughing, was still working hard. He never changed according to the environment around him and it ended up paying off."
Managing the step up
The 177th pick in the NFL draft typically doesn't generate much interest, as it falls in the middle of the third day of the event. However, the Rams made a significant move by choosing their final pick of the fifth round, unknowingly completely overhauling their group of wide receivers with just one selection.
The group, which already had a strong lineup including Cooper Kupp, who led the NFL in receptions, receiving yards, and touchdowns in 2021, was eager to add even more explosive talent. Unfortunately, Kupp had a devastating knee injury last season, and the performance gap between him and the other receivers was noticeable. As a result, the Rams had a difficult time defending their Super Bowl title, going from a 12-5 record in 2021 to a 5-12 record in 2022.
Nacua received early support in Nacua, despite concerns about his injury history during his college years. Despite predictions that he would be chosen in the later rounds, the Rams took a chance on him and included him in their team.
The official NFL scouting report on Nacua, who played for BYU, anticipated his selection in the sixth or seventh round of the draft. The report also pointed out his limitations in terms of speed and agility when it comes to excelling in NFL man coverage.
The scouting report indicated that he would have difficulty avoiding NFL press coverage and lacks quick acceleration to create separation from defensive players.
Upon learning about Nacua's new team, Sitake texted him, and both expressed their excitement about Nacua being coached by Sean McVay and playing alongside Kupp. Sitake had previously played with and coached Kupp during their time at Eastern Washington.
Nacua thrived in the spotlight during Kupp's absence in the initial four weeks of the season, accumulating an impressive 25 receptions and 266 receiving yards in the first two weeks.
"It was an absolute dream come true. I couldn't have asked for anything better," Nacua shared with reporters following the Rams' triumph against the Seahawks in Week 1 in Seattle. "I had an immense amount of fun on the field."
In just two weeks, Nacua shattered three NFL rookie records. His 25 receptions surpassed Earl Cooper's previous record of 19 receptions in the first two games, which had stood since 1980. Additionally, Nacua's 25 receptions in a two-week span surpassed Odell Beckham Jr.'s rookie record of 23 in 2014. Remarkably, Nacua became the first rookie ever to achieve double-digit catches and over 100 receiving yards in both of his first two games.
Sitake says that Nacua was a "delight to coach" at BYU.
At just 37 years old, Rams head coach McVay has witnessed numerous efficient offenses. Since taking on his current role in 2017, he has been recognized for playing a part in initiating an offensive revolution within the league.
When McVay lavishes praise on a player, it's definitely worth paying attention. "He's exceptional. The game comes naturally to him, both physically and mentally strong," McVay commented, discussing Nacua after the Rams' Week 2 defeat against the San Francisco 49ers. "He puts in a tremendous amount of effort."
I believe that even during your conversation with him last week, he showed a strong curiosity. He posed numerous questions and has reliable individuals to seek guidance from, whether that may be Eric Yarber, the Rams receivers coach, or the experienced veterans in the receiver room such as Cooper Kupp. I believe Tutus Atwell has performed exceptionally well.
Moreover, the connection between Van Jefferson and Matthew Stafford allows them to exchange ideas and support each other, which I consider to be a significant advantage. Puka will also strive for further improvement, and I have great admiration for him.
Nacua's journey had just begun, but he wasted no time making an impact. In Week 3, he added another impressive 72 yards to his record. However, it was in Week 4 against the Indianapolis Colts where Nacua truly shined. He delivered a remarkable performance, catching nine passes for a total of 163 yards. This exceptional display also included his first ever touchdown in the NFL, and to make it even more special, it happened to be the game-winning score in overtime for the Rams.

The official NFL Instagram account shared a video clip of Nacuas girlfriend, Hallie Aiono, who was celebrating the moment. She sat there in disbelief, tears rolling down her face. The video garnered over 266,000 likes, indicating the increasing interest in the Rams rookie.
Nacua's praise reached its peak that week when LeBron James, arguably the greatest basketball player of all time, lauded his performances by referring to him as Puka DonÄiÄ - a nod to the magical court skills of the Dallas Mavericks superstar guard. This recognition came during a live stream on social media. Despite the return of Kupp in Week 5, who dominated the majority of targets, Nacua continued to amass impressive statistics without being hindered.
In the following five weeks of the season, Nacua accumulated 326 receiving yards from 25 catches and scored a touchdown.
Despite being a rookie, he ranks among the top five in the NFL for receiving yards (827) and has a remarkable 64 catches. This surpasses Kupp's previous single-season franchise record of 62, which was set in 2017. Additionally, Nacua outshines the next rookie in the league, Jordan Addison, by a staggering 293 receiving yards.
Nacua has given the Rams receiving corps one of the most-feared duos around and his poise defies someone playing his first year in the NFL.
Kupp admitted that there are things he's learning from Nacua, saying there is a "give and take" relationship between the pair.

Sitake told CNN that there will always be a natural element of surprise, not because one would doubt his potential for success, but because he is already on the right track at such a young age. He attributed this achievement to various factors such as finding the right fit, the organization's support, Puka's dedication, the support of his teammates and loved ones.
Puka has achieved a remarkable success this season, thanks to the perfect recipe he has created. Regardless of whether he breaks any records or not, I am genuinely thrilled for him. I genuinely believe that there is no one more deserving than Puka to be on the path they are currently on.
