Summary
Prey director Dan Trachtenberg hints at ongoing discussions for a possible sequel.
The release of Prey in 2022 as an exclusive stream was highly praised, marking a successful comeback and becoming the most-watched premiere on Hulu.
Should Prey 2 receive a green light, it holds the possibility of achieving even more "Predator" franchise milestones, potentially making the director the only one to helm multiple Predator films and featuring the same protagonist in various installments.
Prey director, Dan Trachtenberg, has hinted that discussions regarding Prey 2 are still ongoing. Released exclusively on streaming in 2022, Prey marked the fifth installment in the popular Predator series and was widely praised for its return to the franchise's roots. Despite its success and becoming Hulu's most-watched streaming premiere, 20th Century Studios has yet to confirm whether a sequel will be greenlit.
During an interview with The Playlist, Trachtenberg was asked about his involvement in a potential follow-up. While the director couldn't confirm his active participation in the sequel's development, he did disclose his engagement in "exciting conversations" about the future of the story towards the end of production. Furthermore, he expressed his continuous contemplation of potential ideas. Please see his remarks below.
Could Prey 2 Deliver More Predator Franchise Firsts?
At this moment, I am unable to provide any specific details. However, during the final stages of producing the movie, our team engaged in highly stimulating discussions. Collaborating with the studio, myself, the writer, and the producers, we explored various imaginative concepts for future endeavors. It is worth mentioning that our enthusiasm for envisioning remarkable opportunities has never waned.
Renowned for its revival of the fundamental hunter-and-prey dynamic that propelled the massive success of the original Predator film in 1987, Trachtenberg skillfully injected new elements into his unique installment. Distinguishing itself from other entries in the franchise, this movie took an innovative approach by exclusively streaming on a digital platform, while also giving voice to the Indigenous community as a notable aspect. By retelling a familiar narrative from a often-overlooked perspective, Tratchenberg breathed new life into a franchise that had grown tired due to a series of lackluster sequels.
If 20th Century Studios decides to approve Prey 2 with Tratchenberg as the director, it could bring about innovative developments. Not only would Tratchenberg potentially become the only director to helm multiple Predator movies, but if his plans for Prey 2 involve bringing back Amber Midthunder's character Naru, it would also mark the first time a protagonist is featured in more than one installment. Even Arnold Schwarzenegger's Dutch, despite multiple attempts to revive the character in subsequent films, has yet to appear in more than one movie.
Considering the success of Prey's release, it is highly likely that a sequel will eventually be given the green light. Furthermore, the movie's post-credit scenes tease the return of more Predator ships, setting the stage for Naru's ongoing battle against the formidable extraterrestrial beings known as Yautja. Hopefully, it won't be long before Tratchenberg can proceed with his plans for Prey 2.
