Ensign Brad Boimler, portrayed by Jack Quaid, has the opportunity to advance in rank and eventually become a prominent Captain in Starfleet following his crossover appearance in Star Trek: Strange New Worlds. Serving aboard the USS Cerritos with Captain Carol Freeman, played by Dawnn Lewis, Boimler's adherence to rules often lands him in risky situations due to the influence of his companion Ensign Beckett Mariner, portrayed by Tawny Newsome. While Boimler is characterized by his anxious disposition, he also possesses exceptional intelligence and a fervent dedication to his duties as a Starfleet officer.
In the seventh episode of season 2 of Strange New Worlds, titled "Those Old Scientists," Boimler and later Mariner undergo an unforeseen journey through a time portal, leading them to the past where they find themselves on the USS Enterprise under the command of Captain Christopher Pike, portrayed by Anson Mount. Despite Boimler's awareness of the importance of preserving the timeline, he cannot contain his excitement upon encountering esteemed Starfleet figures such as Pike and Spock, portrayed by Ethan Peck. Boimler's profound knowledge of Starfleet history, combined with his competency as an officer, drives him to consistently strive for honorable actions. While his enthusiasm can be overwhelming, Boimler exhibits the potential to follow in the footsteps of the legendary Captain Pike.
Why Boimler Is Star Trek’s Next Great Captain After Strange New Worlds’ Crossover
Ensign Boimler displayed exceptional composure while aboard Pike's Enterprise, even managing to reveal insights about the future. As Captain Pike and his crew attempt to send Boimler back to his own time, an Orion vessel unexpectedly emerges above the planet Krulmuth-B. Despite the crew's assumption that the Orions are pirates, Boimler challenges their 23rd-century perspective, suggesting that such an assumption is offensive to future Orions. Through a few bumps in the road, Boimler successfully changes Pike and his crew's perception of the Orions, which undoubtedly fosters positive change for the future.
Additionally, Boimler plays a vital role in assisting the Enterprise in tracking the Orion ship. While Pike and his crew deliberately avoid observing his 24th-century knowledge, Boimler discreetly updates the ship to avoid any temporal violations. He also provides encouragement to Pike, highlighting his personal strengths, including his impressive hair, and helping the captain recognize the significant meaning still present in his life despite a tragic future. Once Mariner arrives in the past, both she and Boimler collaborate to develop a solution that ultimately enables their return to their rightful time. They discover that a piece of the NX-01 Enterprise integrated into Pike's Enterprise contains the necessary horonium to send the Ensigns back to the future.
What Boimler Learned From 3 Great Star Trek Captains
Boimler not only served on the USS Cerritos but also had a brief stint on the USS Titan under the command of Captain William T. Riker. The common trait among Captains Riker, Freeman, and Pike is their unwavering confidence and ability to remain composed in challenging situations. Boimler could benefit from their self-assuredness and calmness during crises. Similar to Freeman, Boimler tends to be overly serious and worries too much about others' opinions of him.
While Boimler's time on the Titan suggests that he may not be ready for promotion just yet, his rapid advancement would contradict the foundation of Star Trek: Lower Decks. The possibility of Captain Boimler may only be realized in future Star Trek series, after many years. However, Boimler has the potential to become one of Starfleet's finest captains, much like Pike, who serves as an inspiration for Halloween costumes in the distant future. Although it will take a considerable amount of time for Boimler to reach the captain's chair, he has gleaned valuable lessons from the captains he has served under, including Captain Pike in Star Trek: Strange New Worlds.
