Police apprehend suspect following hostage crisis in Dutch town

One individual has been arrested for reportedly holding hostages at a bar in the central Dutch town of Ede, as per local authorities.

In response to the incident, local police decided to evacuate approximately 150 homes in the vicinity. They mentioned that the motive of the attacker was not clear, and there was no evidence pointing towards terrorism.

The Petticoat cafe, a local bar and nightclub, was where the incident happened, as reported by Dutch daily De Telegraaf.

Earlier on Saturday morning, three hostages were released, with the final hostage being let go later in the day.

Ede Mayor Rene Verhulst mentioned during a news conference that the hostages seemed to be employees who were cleaning the bar.

Also present at the news conference, public prosecutor Marthyne Kunst shared that the suspect had multiple knives and a backpack, although the contents of the backpack were not clear. Kunst added that the suspect was previously convicted of a crime and was familiar to the judicial system.

Authorities will now look into the suspect's reason for the crime and his mental condition, according to Kunst.

Pictures from the location revealed a large number of police officers, some of them heavily armed. De Telegraaf mentioned that a negotiator was also sent to the scene.

Verhulst called the incident a “terrible situation” and said his thoughts and concerns were with those affected.
