Poland took action on Sunday morning by deploying aircraft to protect its airspace following Russia's missile and drone attacks on Ukraine's Lviv region.
The Polish armed forces' Operational Command reported observing a high level of Russian military activity, specifically air and missile strikes on Ukrainian territory.
Ukrainian officials reported that Russia launched approximately 20 missiles and seven Shahed attack drones towards the western Lviv region, near the Polish border. Multiple explosions were also reported in the Ukrainian capital of Kyiv.
Lviv mayor Andrii Sadovyi mentioned that the missiles had aimed at critical infrastructure, but fortunately, no hits were reported in the city.
Operational Command mentioned that both Polish and allied aircraft have been deployed, possibly leading to higher noise levels, especially in the southeastern part of the country.
The Command also reassured that all essential measures to safeguard Polish airspace have been put into action.
Kyiv mayor Vitali Klitschko reported on Telegram that a series of blasts had taken place in the Ukrainian capital. Missile fragments were falling in the Desnianskyi district. Klitschko urged residents to stay in their shelters and mentioned that the air defense system was in operation.
He added that fire and rescue units were heading to the scene.
This is a developing story and will be updated.
Editor's P/S:
The recent missile and drone attacks on Ukraine's Lviv region, mere kilometers from the Polish border, have sent shockwaves through Poland and heightened tensions in the region. The Polish government's swift deployment of aircraft to protect its airspace reflects the growing concern over the potential for spillover effects from the ongoing conflict. The presence of Russian military activity close to NATO territory is a stark reminder of the fragile security situation in Eastern Europe.
As the conflict continues to escalate, it is crucial for all parties involved to exercise restraint and prioritize diplomatic efforts. The targeting of civilian infrastructure is a violation of international law and only serves to exacerbate the humanitarian crisis in Ukraine. The international community must continue to condemn these attacks and call for an immediate ceasefire. It is imperative that the conflict be resolved peacefully
