Pokemon GO: Unveiling the Swablu Evolution Process (Is Altaria Worth the Effort?)

Discover the ultimate guide on capturing Swablu and evolving it into Altaria in Pokemon GO Uncover tips on finding Swablu, obtaining it through trading, evolving it with Swablu candy, and whether Altaria is a valuable addition to your Pokemon GO team

In Pokemon GO, there is still some time before the entire Pokedex is included across all generations. However, there is one advantage that Pokemon GO has over mainline Pokemon games like Sword/Shield and Scarlet/Violet. The introduction of Mega Evolving in Gen 6 brought about a Mega Evolution for Altaria, the evolution of Swablu, in Omega Ruby/Alpha Sapphire.

Both Swablu and Altaria were introduced in Gen 3, and in mainline Pokemon games, they are known more for their defensive capabilities rather than being strong attackers. However, even for Pokemon GO trainers who do not wish to use Swablu or Altaria for battles, there is the option of using Mega Altaria, which can significantly enhance a player's advantage in battles. With a variety of Dragon and Flying-type Pokemon available to catch and choose from, here's what you need to know about the Swablu-line in Pokemon GO.

Where to Find Swablu

Swablu is more likely to appear in Pokemon GO when the weather is Windy or Partly Cloudy due to its Flying-type. However, the frequency of Swablu sightings can also vary based on the location. For instance, Swablu may be more common in the USA compared to other countries.

Another way to encounter Swablu is to check if it is the featured Pokemon during upcoming Spotlight Hour events. These events take place from 6:00pm to 6:59pm local time. It is important to note that this method is not as reliable because there is no guarantee that the Spotlight Hour will feature a Pokemon that trainers need to catch. Therefore, it is advisable for trainers to be on the lookout for Swablu during appropriate weather conditions.

Swablu is not classified as a Legendary Pokemon, resulting in a relatively easier catch. However, it will still flee like any other Pokemon. Additionally, Swablu has the tendency to float to the top of the screen in an attempt to evade Poke Ball throws. To counteract this behavior, employing a Nanab Berry is advised. In order to enhance the catch rate or simplify the capturing process of Swablu, players can opt to feed it a Razz Berry or a Golden Razz Berry. Lastly, individuals desiring to evolve Swablu should consider utilizing a Pinap Berry or a Silver Pinap Berry instead.

How to Get Swablu via Trading

In case Swablu is not appearing, trainers may want to consider trading with a friend. To utilize the trading feature in Pokemon GO, both trainers must reach level 10. The Friendship Level itself is irrelevant, as Swablu (or Altaria) can be traded regardless. However, the higher the Friendship Level, the lower the amount of Stardust required for the Trade. If both trainers have Swablu registered in their Dex, the Stardust cost will be decreased. Conversely, if one trainer does not have it registered, the cost will be increased.

To initiate a Trade, here's what to do:

Tap the trainer icon in the bottom-left corner of the screen.

Select the Friends tab, then scroll down to the Friend who will be sending over the Swablu.

Choose the Trade option, and select a Pokemon to give in exchange for Swablu.

There is no Surprise Trade feature available in Pokemon GO, and players need to be friends in order to utilize the Trade feature. Additionally, trading cannot be conducted unless both players are in close physical proximity. As a result, it is not possible to trade Swablu with someone from a different country, such as the UK and Japan.

How to Evolve Swablu (How to Get Altaria)

To evolve Swablu into Altaria, players will require 400 Swablu Candy. This investment can be quite costly, and trainers may choose to disregard it, particularly if Swablu is not found frequently in their location. Similar to Magikarp and Feebas, the most effective method to accumulate Swablu Candy is by capturing every Swablu that comes across and feeding it with Pinap Berries/Silver Pinap Berries before attempting to capture it with a Poke Ball. Nonetheless, individuals residing in areas where Swablu spawns rarely may encounter difficulties in executing this strategy.

Getting Swablu Candy

To efficiently manage multiple Swablu, players can easily transfer them to Professor Willow. This can be achieved by simply pressing and holding on the Swablu icon in the Storage section, and then selecting the Transfer option located at the bottom of the screen. Using this "hold down + transfer" method allows for the convenient bulk transfer of Swablus, eliminating the need to individually access their summary pages for transfers.

When transferring Swablu, be sure to check its IVs and CP to avoid unintentionally getting rid of one with good stats and power. To easily filter out high-rated Swablus, players can use the Pokemon Storage Search Bar to look for 3-4 star individuals. Additionally, it is advisable to transfer Swablus during in-game events in Pokemon GO that double the amount of Candy earned from transfers.

Alternatively, players can choose to set Swablu as their Buddy Pokemon to slowly accumulate Swablu Candy. For every 1km walked, Swablu will find 1 Candy. While this method may be slower compared to catching and transferring Swablus, it is still more efficient than other Pokemon such as Eevee, which require walking a longer distance of 5km just to earn 1 Candy.

Feeding a Poffin to Swablu reduces the Candy distance requirement.

An alternative method to obtain Altaria is by defeating Mega Altaria in a Mega Raid. The appearance of Mega Altaria is determined by Pokemon GO's in-game events and it does not appear randomly. It should be noted that battling Mega Evolved Pokemon alone is not possible. Mega Raid Pokemon can have a CP of up to 50,000.

Is Altaria Any Good in Pokemon GO?

Altaria may not appear formidable, but it possesses significant value in the Great League of Pokemon GO, primarily attributed to its Charged Attacks. However, when it comes to the Ultra League, Altaria encounters challenges due to heightened difficulty levels and the presence of Pokemon with more versatile "movesets." Consequently, these opposing Pokemon can exploit Altaria's vulnerabilities more effortlessly.

Altaria has the capacity to utilize a single Fast Attack and one or two Charged Attacks.

Altaria has the advantage of Mega Evolving into Mega Altaria. Unlike regular Altaria, Mega Altaria is a Dragon/Fairy-type, which cancels out its weakness to Dragon-type moves but introduces vulnerabilities to Poison and Steel-type attacks. Mega Evolved Pokemon are always significantly stronger than their non-Mega Evolved counterparts, and Altaria is no exception. This makes Mega Altaria an excellent choice for Mega Raid Battles and a valuable asset against challenging Team GO Rocket leaders or the boss. The initial Mega Evolution process for Altaria requires 300 Altaria Mega Energy, but subsequent Mega Evolutions only need 60 Mega Energy.

Pokemon GO is available for mobile devices.
