At the June 2023 Nintendo Direct, Pikmin fans were treated to an exciting preview of Pikmin 4. Alongside the highly anticipated re-releases of Pikmin 1 and 2 on the Nintendo Switch, fans were also given a demo set to release at the end of June. This upcoming title is shaping up to be something truly special, as it takes all the successful elements from the previous Pikmin games and combines them into one impressive package. While the idea of an open world may not be fully realized, it appears that both the overworld and caves will be more detailed and immersive than ever before.
In addition to these exciting details, the Nintendo Direct also revealed the introduction of a rival character who resembles a fusion of Olimar and a Pikmin. This intriguing addition is sure to take the game's storyline in a fascinating direction, as players will have the opportunity to rescue other members of the rescue corps and expand their troops. Furthermore, fans were introduced to two new types of Pikmin: the Ice Pikmin and the spectral green Glow Pikmin, which serve as special nighttime units. With so many elements to manage, Pikmin 4 is shaping up to be more than just an action-RTS game; it seems to be incorporating elements from the RPG genre as well.
Pikmin 4 Gradually Builds A Party of Sorts
After launching Pikmin 4, fans will immediately notice a significant change. Unlike previous games in the franchise, players will now control a customizable character. The original heroes of Pikmin are nowhere to be found, leaving the player and the new crew of the spaceship with the mission of locating and rescuing Captain Olimar. However, before embarking on this rescue mission, the player must first save their companions, which could potentially introduce a larger number of interactive non-playable characters (NPCs) compared to previous Pikmin games.
Upon closer inspection of the main base camp, it becomes clear that the rescued characters will gather around their crashed ship. These fellow astronauts can be interacted with, and some of them offer useful functionalities. Analyzing the trailer, it is revealed that a specific character may be responsible for triggering the "End Day" function, suggesting that night expeditions function similarly. Additionally, one of the background astronauts is shown with a speech bubble containing an exclamation point, indicating the possibility of new dialogue or the presence of side quests and optional paths in Pikmin 4. The introduction of numerous new characters and increased player involvement lends a slight RPG-like atmosphere to the game, but there are also more direct connections to the genre beyond this aspect.
Player Upgrades Are a Key Part of Pikmin 4
The protagonist will discover deposits of sparkling rocks throughout Pikmin 4. By collecting these rocks, they can purchase upgrades for themselves and their companion, Oatchi. These upgrades include elemental resistance, faster running, and potentially other enhancements found in previous Pikmin games. Additionally, there appears to be an item shop, although its inventory remains unclear.
One notable feature is a shop managed by the rescue corps' animal handler. By obtaining Oatchi's Pup Drive, players can acquire upgrades for Oatchi. These upgrades enhance Oatchi's abilities, such as increasing carrying capacity, strengthening attacks, and introducing new skills like jumping and digging. Strengthening Oatchi may become essential due to the new limitation of only having three Pikmin types active at a time. This adds a distinct RPG element to Pikmin 4, allowing players to strategize and customize their army, making the game even more memorable.
Pikmin 4 will be released on July 21 for the Nintendo Switch.
