The costume designers and producers of the upcoming Disney show, Percy Jackson & The Olympians, were instructed to faithfully recreate the appearances of the Greek Gods and other characters from the books. Anticipation is high for the show's first season, set to debut in 2024. Although fans have been given a glimpse through a new trailer and character still images, the specific details of the plot and storyline remain largely undisclosed.
Fans can take comfort in knowing that the dedicated creative team has made every effort to maintain the utmost fidelity to the cherished book when crafting the first season of the show. This commitment to faithfulness extends to the meticulous portrayal of iconic characters, including the revered Greek gods and the various notable individuals encountered by Percy, Annabeth, and Grover throughout their joint adventure.
Disney's Poseidon and Hades appear faithfully depicted in the upcoming show, resembling their literary counterparts.
In a series of roundtable interviews at New York Comic Con 2023, production designer Dan Hennah and costume designer Tish Monaghan divulged to The Geeky Waffle’s Candace Kaw that they were expressly instructed to ensure the characters closely paralleled their literary descriptions.
Percy Jackson & The Olympians characters will look like they do in the book
"When I began my work on the show, I inquired of our producers, 'In what direction should I steer these characters? Would you prefer them to resemble the Greek deities of ancient times or...?' Their response to me was, 'Stick to the book.' Hence, that became my primary source of inspiration. According to the book, the gods, Zeus and Poseidon, possess distinct appearances – Zeus wears a pinstriped suit, while Poseidon adopts a somewhat carefree beach bum look."
We took some creative liberty with his shirt, opting for a casual style to pair with shorts. However, we made sure to include sandals to maintain the described look. As for the character Ares, who will make an appearance in the fourth or fifth episode, we closely followed the book's description. Ares is depicted on a motorcycle, donning a long black leather coat. These were the images we adhered to, as per the requests of the producers and Rick Riordan's vision.
Additionally, the designers expressed their enthusiasm for bringing the god of the Underworld, Hades, to life. They are excited for fans to witness the portrayal of this beloved character.
We opted for a monochrome palette, predominantly white on gray, with layers of black on white, creating a world that is inverted and upside down. His palace serves as his version of an inverted Mount Olympus, symbolizing the underworld. Contrary to the conventional notion of the sky, the realm above comprises mountains and other natural elements. In this world, gravity is defied, creating a unique environment with endless possibilities for surreal elements.
