The Carolina Reaper has met its match.
Chili PepperX has captured the spicy record as the worlds hottest, Guinness World Records announced on Monday.
According to tests conducted by Winthrop University in South Carolina, the new pepper has an average rating of 2.69 million Scoville Heat Units (SHU), surpassing the previous record holder, Carolina Reaper, which has an average rating of 1.64 million SHU according to Guinness World Records. The SHU scale, developed by American chemist Wilbur Scoville in 1912, is used to measure the heat of chili peppers.
By comparison, the average jalapeño pepper scores between 3,000 to 8,000 SHU, according to Guinness.

Pepper X is cultivated by Ed Currie, the founder of Puckerbutt Pepper Company based in South Carolina. Ed Currie, renowned for creating the Carolina Reaper that secured a record in 2013, spent over a decade growing Pepper X on his farm. During this time, he implemented cross-breeding techniques with his spiciest peppers to enhance the capsaicin levels of Pepper X, as stated on the Guinness website.
Currie initially introduced Pepper X on an episode of the widely known YouTube series called "Hot Ones."
According to the Puckerbutt Pepper Company's website, a description of the dethroned pepper states, "Only fools underestimate the heat of the Reaper. It is exquisitely agonizing."
No word yet on how they describe a pepper that ranks 1 million more units on the Scoville scale than the Reaper.
