The upcoming 2024 event of Awesome Games Done Quick will include an exciting feature - a talented dog performing a speedrun. This captivating display of intelligence and gaming abilities will see the dog and its owner team up to complete a retro game in record time. While Awesome Games Done Quick is known for its charity speedrunning events, this particular edition will be truly one-of-a-kind, marking the first-ever participation of a dog in AGDQ's history.

In an upcoming event called AGDQ in 2024, video game streamer and speedrunner JSR_ will be showcasing their skills. JSR_ has released a teaser video on YouTube featuring their Shiba Inu dog named Peanut Butter. In the video, Peanut Butter will be taking on the challenge of speedrunning the retro game Gyromite, a puzzle game designed for the NES platform. It's worth mentioning that both JSR_ and Peanut Butter will be participating in the event online, with JSR_ playing Gyromite before joining their dog for a joint appearance. However, JSR_ will also be present in person to take on the speedrun of Castlevania 3: Dracula's Curse. So mark your calendars for this exciting occasion!

While it may come as a surprise that a dog is participating in AGDQ, there is a logical explanation for how this is possible. JSR_ and Peanut Butter have been inseparable companions ever since the latter was a young pup. However, it quickly became apparent to JSR_ during the dog's training that Peanut Butter possessed a level of intelligence far surpassing that of most other canines. Being an avid gamer himself, JSR_ decided that it made perfect sense to train Peanut Butter to play video games as well. In order to facilitate this, they had to construct a custom controller featuring four color-coded buttons for the dog to manipulate. These buttons were carefully mapped to the A, B, and Select buttons of an NES controller, with the fourth button serving as a means for Peanut Butter to simultaneously press A and B.

The controller, along with JSR_ and Peanut Butter, can be witnessed in action in a Gyromite speedrun video uploaded to YouTube on July 13. Throughout the video, the individual controls the game while Peanut Butter press the buttons independently, receiving guidance and rewards. The video demonstrates that dogs, like humans, are capable of playing video games and performing speed runs with the right training, dedication, and motivation. Whether Peanut Butter is genuinely playing or simply following their owner's instructions is a topic for another discussion.

AGDQ 2024 will run from January 14 - 21.
