Patrick Stewart reveals plans for groundbreaking Star Trek film

Patrick Stewart, renowned Star Trek veteran, reveals his involvement in an intriguing and groundbreaking new film project, signaling Paramount's heightened commitment to expanding the beloved Star Trek universe

Patrick Stewart, a veteran of Star Trek, has confirmed that Paramount has extended an invitation for him to star in an upcoming mystery movie project. Since joining the franchise in 1987 as Captain Jean-Luc Picard in Star Trek: The Next Generation, Stewart has continued to portray the iconic character in four Next Generation films, as well as the 2020 Paramount+ series Star Trek: Picard.

Stewart received acclaim from both critics and fans for his role as Picard, with his dignified demeanor serving as a compelling contrast to William Shatner’s Captain Kirk. He has recently disclosed the sources of inspiration for his performance, citing Horatio Hornblower and his father, Regimental Sergeant Major Alfred Stewart.

Many believed that Stewart’s portrayal of Picard in the final season marked his departure from the larger franchise, but it appears that may not be the case after all.

Patrick Stewart announces “experimental” new Star Trek movie

Stewart disclosed his involvement in discussions to take on a role in an upcoming Star Trek project during a recent installment of the Happy Sad Confused podcast. The highly-regarded actor also suggested that the movie is different from any of his previous contributions to the Star Trek series.

"I was just informed last night about a script being penned specifically for actor Patrick Stewart to star in," Stewart revealed. "I've been informed that it should be in my hands within the next week."

"I'm thrilled," he added. "It seems like the type of project where the kind of artistic exploration I'm eager to pursue will be crucial for this material. It's quite gratifying to receive such an offer at 83."

The Happy Sad Confused episode premiered in January 2024, but it was actually recorded in November 2023. As a result, Stewart is expected to have a copy of the script for the new Star Trek movie. However, Paramount has not yet announced the movie officially, and it is unclear if Stewart has officially agreed to be part of it.

There is also very little information available about the movie's plot and characters, but it is assumed that Picard will have a significant role in the film.

Paramount ramps up its Star Trek slate

Stewart’s upcoming Star Trek project is being developed during a period of substantial investment by Paramount in the franchise. Despite the delay of Star Trek 4, there are several movies in the works, including the Michelle Yeoh vehicle Section 31.

Currently available for streaming on Paramount+ are three Star Trek TV shows: Star Trek: Discovery, Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, and Star Trek: Lower Decks. It was announced in June 2023 that a fourth series, Star Trek: Prodigy, had been canceled, but it has since been picked up by Netflix.
