Why Use DALL-E 3 Prompts With MidJourney?

While DALL-E 3 excels at effortlessly creating precise compositions for specific images, it lacks the artistic and visual flair that MidJourney offers. To demonstrate this disparity, we have used the same prompt for both image generators, allowing us to directly compare their outputs. It is worth noting that the superiority of one over the other is subjective, yet it is indisputable that the detailed prompts generated by ChatGPT for DALL-E surpass the lackluster prompts commonly used for MidJourney. Let's observe the distinction between the DALL-E 3 image on the left and the MidJourney image on the right, both with identical prompts:

I have experimented with generating prompts using both the free and paid versions of plain vanilla ChatGPT. Although it is possible to create prompts for MidJourney, they do not match the quality of prompts generated by the specialized DALL-E mode for ChatGPT. Whether this difference is attributable to the placebo effect remains uncertain; however, it is reasonable to assume that OpenAI has conducted some fine-tuning on this particular mode of ChatGPT to enhance image production.

How DALL-E 3 Works in ChatGPT

In order to understand the effectiveness of DALL-E 3 in providing excellent prompts, it is important to briefly explain the process of generating images using ChatGPT and DALL-E 3, and how it differs from MidJourney.

In MidJourney, you directly input a "prompt" into the image generator. The AI model in MidJourney then attempts to represent those words as an image using a technique called "diffusion." Even slight changes in the wording or structure of the prompt can significantly impact the final result. This is why the skill of "prompt engineering" has become prevalent, with certain individuals displaying a talent for formulating or discovering prompts that consistently produce superior images.

When utilizing ChatGPT with DALL-E 3, the image depiction you desire is indirectly conveyed. You'll describe to ChatGPT the desired image content, while it constructs the actual prompt sent to DALL-E 3.

This means the AI chatbot is taking over the job of prompt engineer, and that gives us the opportunity to use its prompt engineering prowess in MidJourney.

Porting ChatGPT's DALL-E 3 Prompts Back into MidJourney

The actual prompts that DALL-E 3 has utilized to generate the requested images may not be readily identifiable. However, you can effortlessly access the prompts by clicking on any of the images displayed in the results, which will open the gallery.

To the right of the image is the prompt, although you'll likely not see it all in the preview. Click the "Copy" button below the prompt to copy it to the clipboard.

Next, in MidJourney, you should paste the prompt into Discord, just as you would typically do when entering a prompt. Make sure to include any MidJourney-specific parameters, such as the aspect ratio, and then send the instructions to the AI.

exactly as it is, without any changes. The placeholder should remain in its original position.

Please note that each of the (up to) four images generated by ChatGPT using DALL-E 3 will have its own distinct prompt. Therefore, select the one that yields the most favorable outcome based on your personal preference.

Although I have been greatly amazed by DALL-E 3 thus far, I am not yet prepared to terminate my MidJourney subscription. Whenever I receive an exceptionally impressive prompt from DALL-E 3, I like to input it into MidJourney to observe the artistic interpretation produced by the less cautious AI.
