One Punch Man captivated fans when it debuted on TV screens in October 2015. The series' captivating world, lovable characters, and hilarious moments quickly propelled it from a niche following to an anime sensation. This Shonen series originated from a webcomic called One Punch Man, which was created by One as a hobby. As the webcomic gained immense popularity, it caught the attention of renowned manga artist Yusuke Murata, who teamed up with One to continue writing the manga. The series' success led to a large and dedicated fan base, as well as the production of a second season. In this season, the show expanded on the world's lore, developed existing characters, and introduced new heroes and villains.
A Quick Recap
The story of One Punch Man centers around Saitama, an aspiring hero who has dedicated himself to intense training, resulting in the loss of all his hair. This training has bestowed upon Saitama an unimaginable level of strength, allowing him to triumph over any opponent with a single punch. However, this overwhelming power has left him feeling utterly bored and unable to experience the excitement of a challenging fight, as all his adversaries pale in comparison to his abilities.
The first season of the show consists of mostly standalone episodes, loosely connected by a few narrative threads. These include the relationship between Saitama and Genos, the Hero Association's role in combating monsters, the diverse range of heroes within the association, and Saitama's personal journey to progress through the ranks. The season builds up to Saitama's ultimate battle against Boros, a formidable foe who, like Saitama, possesses unrivaled strength. However, it is revealed that Saitama hadn't even exerted his full power during their fight, demonstrating just how superior he truly is.
Monster Association Arc
The second season introduces similar tropes, but places a greater emphasis on the overarching narrative. While the episodes themselves each present a distinct storyline in the initial part of the season, they are all interconnected and driven forward by the tale of Garou, the hero hunter, and the world's response to the escalating monster attacks. These plotlines eventually converge in the final few episodes, introducing formidable adversaries that require the combined strength of Saitama, Genos, and other top-tier heroes to overcome. The conclusion of season 2 effectively builds upon the previous seasons and sets the stage for the Monster Association arc, which will take center stage in One Punch Man season 3.
The Monster Association Arc picks up right where season 2 left off, with Saitama dealing a fatal blow to Elder Centipede and Garou's abduction by Phoenix Man to an undisclosed location. This arc revolves around the eponymous Monster Association, an enigmatic and sinister organization that stands in direct opposition to the Hero Association. Their ultimate goal is to establish a world where monsters reign supreme and eradicate all heroes who stand in their way. Leading this malevolent group is the formidable Monster King Orochi, an enormous and immensely powerful being who ensures their success by granting ordinary humans his monstrous cells. The ingestion of these cells initiates a process known as "monsterization," gradually transforming individuals into drastically more potent monsters. This was evidenced at the end of season 2 when some members of the fighting championship underwent this transformation.
Garou is brought to the Monster Association headquarters by Phoenix Man. There, he encounters Orochi, who forces him to consume his cells, resulting in a transformation into a monster. The storyline continues as the Hero Association gathers their resources and strategizes their next steps, dealing with increasing numbers of monster attacks in the cities.
Simultaneously, whispers about a mysterious entity known as 'God' begin to surface among the characters. This unveils a much larger narrative that expands the One Punch Man universe and introduces numerous characters with connections to 'God'. Among them are formidable dragon-level threats like Homeless Emperor, who derives his power from 'God'. The highly anticipated character, Blast, finally makes an appearance, the top-ranked hero in the S-Class, whose introduction was teased in One Punch Man season 1, episode 10, "Unparalleled Peril".
The Spectacle
The arc in the One Punch Man manga showcases epic fights and spectacles that will translate seamlessly onto the screen. The scale of these battles is immense, involving the slicing open of entire sections of the planet and the complete obliteration of moons. What makes these fights even more remarkable is that every character introduced, especially those in the S-Class, gets their chance to shine. They join forces to confront monumental threats and calamities that pose a danger to the planet's existence.
These enemies surpass the power of previous adversaries, making them all the more captivating. Their clashes with the story's heroes are truly awe-inspiring, providing countless moments that will leave fans speechless and on the edge of their seats.
The Best Villain
The Monster Association arc in the previous 2 seasons explores the themes of isolation and loneliness that accompany being significantly stronger than others. Saitama embodies this, while Garou represents the opposite, working hard to reach his desired level of strength by challenging progressively tougher opponents. After the defeat of most of the Monster Association, only Garou remains, leading to an epic showdown with Saitama. This fight is truly jaw-dropping and the most spectacular in the series thus far.
Although Garou is a merciless villain, he is not a one-dimensional character. Unlike many villains typically seen in the shonen genre, Garou bears the weight of absolute strength solely for the purpose of surpassing everyone else and creating a world without inequality. Despite his misguided approach, this makes Garou a highly relatable and sympathetic character, as he strives to achieve his goals for what he believes to be a just cause. The impending battle between him and Saitama is anticipated to be a visually stunning display that fully showcases the animators' skills.
The Larger Story
The Monster Association arc introduces thrilling new elements to the world building and storytelling. Blast, a character introduced in this arc, has spent the past two decades searching for mysterious cubes scattered across the universe. These cubes enable communication with 'God' and Blast has teamed up with other powerful characters to defeat it. 'God' is an ancient and immensely powerful being that can grant a fraction of its power to those it deems worthy. This poses a great danger to our heroes, as even a small portion of this power allowed Garou to rival Saitama for a period of time.
The Monster Association arc serves as a foundation for further story development, leaving us eager to see where the narrative will take us. Blast's 20-year mission and plan open up unforeseen possibilities for the story, creating endless potential. This adds a greater meta-narrative that continually progresses in the background, while the series maintains its familiar arc structure.
This has the potential to become a highly successful and intricately crafted story, filled with memorable moments for both the plot and characters. Considering the immense impact of the Monster Association arc, there is no denying that season 3 of One Punch Man will revolutionize the game. You can catch One Punch Man on Netflix and Hulu for streaming.
