Netflix's live-action adaptation of One Piece has surpassed expectations, gaining popularity after its initial airing. While a second season has not been confirmed yet, the producers have completed scripts for season 2 and anticipate that it could be ready to air within 12 to 18 months after production commences. In a recent interview with Variety, Tomorrow Studios, the production studio behind One Piece, shared their future plans for the series.
"We have prepared scripts," CEO Marty Adelstein mentioned. "If we work swiftly, we could realistically be ready for airing in about a year. It's a possibility. It might take somewhere between a year and 18 months," President Becky Clements added, acknowledging that the ongoing SAG-AFTRA strike could potentially extend the timeline.
Although the series has not been officially renewed for a second season, there are positive indicators. During its initial release week, the first season achieved remarkable success by ranking first on Netflix's internal Top 10 list and garnering 18.5 million views. "Netflix keeps their plans private until after the show is launched," Clements explained. "However, given their support for the title, we anticipated it to reach the top position. We also sensed the potential for this outcome through their research and algorithms. Following the launch, in our subsequent conversations, we were informed that we have surpassed expectations, which is absolutely fantastic."
Speculating, Adelstein suggests that Netflix is considering different approaches regarding the number of episodes they produce and whether they should divide them. Adelstein anticipates that Netflix will announce their decision within the next one to two weeks, indicating their strong desire to continue the series and develop a long-term plan.
Additionally, Tomorrow Studios produced the live action Cowboy Bebop series for Netflix. However, the series was not as successful and was canceled by Netflix less than a month after its debut.
