An unexpected travel companion turned unlikely ally, Jewelry Bonney plays a central role in the ongoing Egghead Arc of One Piece. She embarks on a journey to the "Future Island" to settle a score with Dr. Vegapunk, whom she blames for the loss of her father, Bartholomew Kuma. He was transformed into a mindless cyborg and had his memories erased as part of the Pacifista project. Witnessing her father's humiliation at the hands of the World Nobles during the Levely, where he was made to obey the Marines against his will, only deepens her disgust.
Upon arrival at Egghead, Bonney uncovers a shocking revelation about the tragedy that befell her father's life. Through a paw-shaped bubble in Vegapunk's Labophase, she experiences his memories and suspects that the true culprit is none other than Saint Jaygarcia Saturn of the Five Elders, a highly influential figure in the world of One Piece. As the Marines descend upon the island and Saturn battles directly against the Straw Hat Pirates, will Bonney seize the opportunity to avenge her father amidst the chaos?
Bonney And Kuma's Relationship
Despite Bartholomew Kuma's infamous reputation as a tyrant in his role as a Warlord of the Sea and ruler of the Sorbet Kingdom, his relationship with his daughter Bonney was surprisingly positive. Flashbacks from her childhood reveal Kuma showering Bonney with affection and sharing the ancient legend of the Sun God Nika, which was passed down by his ancestral Buccaneers race.
Bonney reciprocated her father's love intensely and struggles to fight against or allow harm to the Pacifista, which bear his likeness. She fiercely defends Kuma's character whenever anyone dares to speak ill of him. While it remains uncertain whether Bonney is also a descendant of the Buccaneers due to her biological connection with Kuma, it is evident that Kuma cherished his daughter deeply.
Losing Her Father To The Pacifista Project
This raises questions about his decision to let Vegapunk erase his personality and memories without considering Bonney. There have long been rumors that Kuma was a spy for the Revolutionary Army, a group he was once a part of before becoming a Warlord. However, it remains uncertain if this influenced his choice to become a Pacifista. After the intense Marineford Summit War, the Blackbeard Pirates managed to capture Bonney. Seizing this opportunity, Teach used her as a bargaining tool to secure a battleship from the Marines. However, his plan took an unexpected turn when Fleet Admiral Sakazuki himself showed up for the exchange. Fearing the powerful Marine, Blackbeard made a hasty retreat, leaving Bonney behind. Heartbroken over her father's demise, Bonney couldn't come to terms with the fact that Kuma had willingly sacrificed himself and undergone the Pacifista project, which erased his memories. Sensing her denial, Sakazuki admonished her for not accepting the reality of the situation.
Bonney had a strong reaction to these events and was subsequently arrested and imprisoned. However, she managed to escape and made her way to the Levely on Mary Geoise. There, she encountered Sabo and other members of the Revolutionary Army who were also working towards freeing Kuma. Witnessing her father's liberation by the Revolutionaries, Bonney decided to confront Vegapunk on Egghead and demand that he find a way to restore Kuma's memories.
Initially, Bonney held a hostile attitude towards Vegapunk. But her perception changed after she witnessed Kuma's memories firsthand, made possible by the power of his Devil Fruit. In one revealing flashback, it was hinted that Vegapunk received a command to erase Kuma's mind and personality completely. It is likely that Saint Jaygarcia Saturn was behind this command, considering Bonney's immediate hostile reaction towards him when he arrived on Egghead and her attempt to harm him.
Can Bonney And The Straw Hats Defeat Saturn?
Unfortunately, Bonney's attack on Saturn had little effect - his wound quickly healed and he effortlessly repelled her. Angered by her father's loss, Bonney was crushed by Saturn, who justified Kuma's enslavement due to his race, showcasing the disdain of the Five Elders towards those beneath the World Nobles. Given the current circumstances, Bonney faced an uphill battle against Saturn, especially with Luffy incapacitated after using Gear 5 for an extended period against Admiral Kizaru.
However, Bonney's ability to manipulate her opponents' age could be the key in this fight. Saturn's mysterious powers have completely immobilized members of the Straw Hat Pirates such as Sanji and Franky. It may be possible for the crew to distract Saturn and create an opportunity for Bonney to use her powers to turn him into a vulnerable child. Reversing Saturn's aging might be the only viable option, considering the speculation that he possesses the Ope Ope no Mi's Perpetual Youth Surgery and has ceased aging after gaining immortality.
That being said, Bonney could explore alternative ways to utilize her powers. One possibility is using them to assist Luffy in recovering from the main side effect of overusing Gear 5, which accelerates aging. Additionally, there are external factors to consider, such as the emergence of the Iron Giant from the Void Century or even the potential involvement of Bartholomew Kuma, who was last seen fleeing the scene of destruction in Mary Geoise. Therefore, although Bonney may not succeed alone, she may find her revenge by placing her trust in her allies.
