O.J. Simpson passed away at the age of 76 on April 10 after battling prostate cancer. His attorney, Malcolm Lavergne, confirmed the cause of death to TMZ on Friday, April 26. Simpson had been in hospice care for several months before his passing.
"Our father, Orenthal James Simpson, passed away on April 10th after a courageous battle with cancer. He was surrounded by his children and grandchildren," the family statement said. "During this difficult time, we kindly ask for privacy and understanding."
Before his passing, a Las Vegas news outlet had reported that Simpson was receiving treatment for prostate cancer. Although he didn't confirm the diagnosis then, he did clarify that he was not in hospice care.
In a social media video posted in February, Simpson laughed and questioned, "Hospice? You're talking about hospice?" He expressed confusion about where that information came from.
Simpson then talked about his upcoming plans to host "a ton of friends for the Super Bowl" in Las Vegas, reassuring his audience that everything is going well. He ended the video by wishing everyone a good Super Bowl weekend and telling them to take care.
The former athlete gained fame while playing for the Buffalo Bills in the 1990s. However, his professional success was soon eclipsed by personal troubles. O.J. Simpson was arrested and charged with the murder of his ex-wife Nicole Brown Simpson and Ron Goldman.
Although acquitted of the murder charges in 1995, Simpson was later found guilty in a civil suit for wrongful death and battery against Goldman filed by the late Goldman’s family.
Over the years, O.J. made headlines again in 2007 when he was arrested for an armed robbery. He was later found guilty of kidnapping and armed robbery, serving his time in a Las Vegas prison. In 2021, O.J. was released on parole after serving the required nine years.
In 2019, O.J. mentioned his choice to not look back at his infamous murder trial. He told The Associated Press, "We don't need to relive the worst day of our lives. The past is something I prefer not to revisit. My focus, along with my family, is on staying positive and moving forward in what we call the 'no negative zone.'"
O.J. is survived by four children: Arnelle and Jason, from his first marriage to Marguerite Whitley, and Sydney and Justin, from his marriage to Nicole.
