An off-duty police officer in Washington, DC was shot and injured on their way to work. The police chief confirmed that two suspects have been arrested in connection with the incident.
During a news conference on Monday afternoon, Metropolitan Police Department Chief Pamela Smith reported that the injured officer, a captain with 18 years of experience, is currently receiving treatment for non-life-threatening injuries. Despite the incident, the officer managed to drive themselves to a nearby police station for assistance.
"While one of our officers was on his way to work, he noticed a car driving recklessly," shared Smith. "The individuals in the car suddenly stopped, exited the vehicle, and started shooting at our officer." One of the suspects fired at the officer while he was inside his own vehicle.
The officer, who was in plain clothes and driving his personal vehicle, was shot in the vicinity of 7th Street and Oneida Place in Northwest DC, a peaceful residential area close to a church, as reported by the police.
Police have not disclosed the exact location of the officer's injury or confirmed whether it was a carjacking, as the investigation is still ongoing. Additionally, it remains unclear if any weapons were seized at the scene in Maryland.
Initially, police spokesman Paris Lewbel informed CNN that an officer from the Metropolitan Police Department was shot in Washington, DC. However, he did not give any information regarding the officer's condition or details about a possible suspect at that moment.
The officer obtained a description of the vehicle and a partial license plate, which assisted the police in locating the vehicle in Landover, Maryland. The vehicle eventually crashed there, as reported by the chief. Two adult male suspects were apprehended by the police.
Smith expressed gratitude that the officer did not suffer any life-threatening injuries. The officer is currently at a local hospital with his family and the support team from the police department.
Smith mentioned that she hasn't had a chance to talk to the officer yet because he was having a CT scan.
She emphasized that the incident could have involved anyone and it wasn't limited to a Metropolitan Police Department officer. Smith expressed that in situations like this, it is important to understand that the city will not accept any form of violence.
