Novak Djokovic, a 24-time tennis grand slam champion, showcased his skills at the flagship event in men's golf during the 2023 Ryder Cup celebrity All-Star match. Celebrating his success with a footballer's signature move, Djokovic was watched on by a Formula One driver. The match, held at Marco Simone Golf Club in Rome, featured an exhilarating display of sporting excellence and ended with Djokovic's team, led by Colin Montgomerie, securing a 7-4 victory over Corey Pavin's side. This triumph came just after Djokovic's historic win at the US Open earlier this month.
Partnered with England's Golf for the Disabled (G4D) Tour's top-ranked player, Kipp Popert, Novak Djokovic joined forces with Ferrari driver Carlos Sainz and recent G4D champion Tomasso Perrino. Djokovic then traded his tennis racket for a golf club, beginning with his usual golfer's posture at the first tee. However, he promptly switched to a driver and confidently struck his first shot down the fairway, outperforming Sainz, who grimaced as his opening shot veered towards the rough.
The trend continued throughout the contests, with the standout moment occurring at the par four 16th hole when Djokovic launched a powerful drive that traveled 260 yards from the tee to the green. Straining to follow the trajectory of his shot, the tennis star extended his arms towards the audience before lowering them to mimic Cristiano Ronaldo's famous Siu goal celebration.
Djokovic attributed his actions to the influence of the crowd, stating, "I'm thrilled that they prompted me to do it, as I was originally planning on playing it safe."

After securing a 3-1 win, Djokovic showered praise on Poppert, who triumphed at the BMW PGA Championship this month, capturing his third consecutive G4D victory and eighth overall.
"It was all about my partner today, he delivered his A-game," Djokovic said.

Having the opportunity to walk alongside Prince Harry and share our personal triumphs in our respective sports was an incredibly enjoyable experience. The dedication and skill exhibited by disabled golfers, like Brendan Lawlor, is truly remarkable. During our conversation, I expressed my admiration for wheelchair tennis players who have consistently inspired me throughout the years.
"As for the level of my golf, I have to say Im pleased because I havent been playing much but played some really good holes today."
Poppert returned the praise, reflecting on an "incredible" day.
"I mentioned to Novak that I have undergone numerous surgeries throughout my life. Even as a child, I would imagine myself in situations like this and contemplate the sensations involved.
"What surprises me is how at ease I felt during this encounter. Being in the presence of one of the greatest sportsmen ever, who also happened to be an absolute gentleman, made the experience truly delightful. I had a fantastic time and thoroughly enjoyed it."

Bale impresses again
In another match, Montgomerie from Scotland faced off against Pavin, reminiscent of their previous encounter as non-playing captains at the 2010 Ryder Cup in Wales, where Europe emerged victorious with a score of 14.5 - 13.5. Adding to the significance, a renowned Welsh sporting figure also joined the competition.
Gareth Bale, a five-time winner of the Champions League, openly expressed his passion for golf throughout his illustrious playing career with Tottenham Hotspur and Real Madrid. He garnered attention with his impressive performance at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am in February.

Bale, despite admitting to a back injury, did not let it hinder him on the golf course. Playing with a two handicap, he and his partner emerged victorious with a 2-1 score against the Ukrainian football icon Andriy Shevchenko and Pavin.
With Team Montys Garret Hilbert, a member of the YouTube content creator group Dude Perfect, and Italian Olympic surfer Leonardo Fioravanti tying the game at 2-2 against Hollywood actor Kathryn Newton and Super Bowl-winning wide receiver Victor Cruz in the final matchup, Montgomerie once again emerged victorious against his American counterpart.

Throughout my eight appearances at the tournament, I proudly maintained an unbeaten record in singles matches. The golf course was truly exceptional, offering thrilling opportunities and enticing rewards. We eagerly anticipate the upcoming week for the team."
