On Thursday, North Korea announced plans to deploy new military equipment along the demarcation line with South Korea, in response to Seoul's partial withdrawal from a 2018 agreement aimed at reducing border tensions. This decision came after Seoul pledged to enhance intelligence and surveillance along the DMZ following North Korea's launch of a spy satellite, which analysts believe could provide valuable information for targeting enemy forces.
Seoul's reactive move indicates a partial withdrawal from the Inter-Korean Military Agreement, signed in 2018 to address the threat of war on the Korean Peninsula and expand the buffer zone between the two Koreas. The agreement was signed by then-South Korean President Moon Jae-in and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un in Panmunjom on the border, with the declaration that "there will be no more war on the Korean Peninsula and thus a new era of peace has begun."
The goodwill from the agreement has disappeared in recent years as Kim did not receive the concessions he wanted and ramped up North Korea's ballistic missile program. In response, the US, South Korea, and Japan have increased their military cooperation, which Pyongyang views as a threat.
Earlier this week, North Korea condemned the US for considering the sale of advanced missiles to Japan and military equipment to South Korea. They referred to it as "a dangerous act" in a report from KCNA, claiming that it was "obvious" who the offensive military equipment would be aimed at and used against.
On Thursday, North Korea's Defense Ministry declared that its military would not adhere to the military agreement, promising to deploy stronger armed forces and new military hardware along the Military Demarcation Line in the region, as reported by KCNA.
The Ministry asserted that the agreement has essentially become useless due to intentional and provocative actions by South Korea, and issued a warning that South Korea would suffer consequences for its irresponsible and serious political and military provocations that have escalated the current situation to an uncontrollable level, as per KCNA.
Pyongyang has also stated that South Korea will be fully responsible for any clashes that occur between the two Koreas. The KCNA added that the military demarcation line poses the most dangerous situation where a slight accidental factor could escalate into an all-out war, due to serious mistakes made by the political and military leaders of South Korea.
