Nintendo's Patent Application Reveals a Dual-Screen System with Split Functionality

Nintendo patent reveals a groundbreaking dual-screen system with the ability to split, hinting at a potential successor to the widely popular Switch console

New information has emerged regarding patent applications allegedly filed by Nintendo in November 2022. These details reveal a new concept for a dual-screen gaming device that can be separated into two parts. However, it is important to note that the existence of a granted patent, or even an application, does not guarantee the development of an actual product.

The World Intellectual Property Organisation website, as shared by ResetEra and first reported by GameRant, showcases Nintendo's device that bears similarities to their previous handheld consoles, the DS and 3DS. These consoles utilized a dual-screen setup for gaming. The application suggests that the top and bottom halves of the device can function independently, which was not possible with the DS and 3DS. Even when closed, the device still displays a screen on the outer side.

The patent application states that this electronic apparatus consists of a first device and a second device that can be detachably connected to each other. The first device features a first surface with a first display and a first connection unit positioned on it. On the other hand, the second device has a second surface with a second display, a second rear surface on the opposite side, and a second connection unit located on the second rear surface.

It should be noted that Nintendo has previously filed patents for various new devices, like an oval-shaped handheld device. However, many of these ideas have not progressed beyond the application stage. Currently, it is possible that this dual-screen handheld gaming console concept is another example of Nintendo safeguarding its technological advancements for potential future releases.

The next Nintendo console is expected to have a smoother transition from the current Switch. According to Nintendo of America boss Doug Bowser, the Nintendo Account system from the Switch will continue to be used on the new console. Nintendo's CEO, Shuntaro Furukawa, has also confirmed this, stating that the next Nintendo console will utilize the same Nintendo Account system as the Switch. It is still uncertain if this means the new system will be backward compatible with Switch games. Reports suggest that the company may have showcased the new console to developers at Gamescom in August, and some studios are rumored to already have access to the console.

As a hard fan of Nintendo, I am always excited to hear about new patents that the company files. The latest patent application for a dual-screen system with split functionality has me particularly intrigued. This concept has the potential to be a real game-changer for Nintendo, as it could offer a unique and innovative way to play games.

I can imagine this dual-screen system being used for a variety of different games. For example, one screen could be used for the main gameplay, while the other screen could be used for inventory management, map viewing, or other secondary functions. This would allow for a more immersive and streamlined gaming experience. Additionally, the ability to split the system into two separate devices could make it more portable and convenient for gaming on the go.
