In June, the Nintendo Switch achieved a new milestone in Japan by selling the highest number of consoles, despite being six years old. This record-breaking achievement is unprecedented for a console of its age, indicating that there is still plenty of life left in the aging device.
When the Nintendo Switch was launched in 2017, it had a limited selection of games available, with many players primarily focusing on The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild throughout its first year. However, fast forward to 2023, and the Nintendo Switch has now sold over 120 million units, with Nintendo introducing more than 50 successful exclusives for the system. The immense success of this hybrid console has even enabled it to surpass the sales of the PlayStation 4. Not only has Nintendo successfully recovered from the disappointing period of the Wii U, but the Switch continues to smash records to this day.
The Nintendo Switch continues to achieve new milestones and shows no signs of slowing down. In June, the system sold a remarkable 380,000 units in Japan, marking the highest sales figures for that month. This is a significant 68% increase compared to June of the previous year. These sales are typically expected during the initial years of a console's life, not when it is already in its seventh year of production like the Nintendo Switch.
Moreover, not only did the Switch set a sales record for June, but it is also well on its way to becoming the best-selling console in the country, with an anticipated 30 million units sold. This success can be attributed to the release of major titles such as The Super Mario Bros. Movie and The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom. It comes as no surprise that more and more people are opting to purchase the system. Furthermore, with the upcoming releases of Super Mario RPG and Super Mario Bros. Wonder later this year, it is highly likely that even more records will be shattered.
