The NFL makes history in 2024 by bringing its first-ever regular season game to South America, with São Paulo, Brazil selected as the host city Get ready for an epic showdown as American football takes center stage in a new continent!

Football continues to go global.

The National Football League (NFL) announced on Wednesday that São Paulo, Brazil, will host a regular season game in 2024, the first ever in South America.

As per NFL.com, the league boasts 38 million fans in Brazil, with the sport gaining popularity among younger fans due to its strong social media presence.

The event will be held at the 49,000-seat Corinthians Stadium, typically the home of the Brazilian top-flight soccer club Corinthians.

The NFL's 2024 international schedule features four games, in addition to the Brazil fixture. The Jacksonville Jaguars have secured a deal (separate from the league's agreement with overseas stadiums) to play at Wembley Stadium in London, while the English capital will also host two games at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. Additionally, Munich's Allianz Arena - home to soccer giant Bayern Munich - will also host a game.

São Paulo was chosen instead of Madrid, although the Spanish capital has not been eliminated as a potential future location for the NFL.

"The exciting news is that both cities are really feasible and eager to host games," stated Peter OReilly, the NFL's executive vice president of club business, international, and league events.

"We are eagerly looking forward to the opportunity to play in Madrid and Brazil in the future. Our decision to prioritize Brazil is driven by our excitement to play in a new continent for the first time, specifically in South America for the regular season. The chance to play in Spain may come as early as 2025, as NFL teams have voted to increase the number of international games per season starting from that year."

Teams must play a game overseas every four years, resulting in the possibility of the NFL scheduling up to eight games abroad (not counting the Jaguars agreement) each season. Additionally, this allows the league to revisit Mexico City, where the last game was hosted in 2022.

Super Bowl heads back to LA in 2027

The December League Meeting also saw team owners vote for Super Bowl LXI in February 2027 to be held in SoFi Stadium in Inglewood California.

The Los Angeles Rams' home stadium will host the Super Bowl for the second time in five years. In 2022, the Rams won against the Cincinnati Bengals with a score of 23-20, making them only the second team in NFL history to win the Super Bowl on their home field.

"The city did an exceptional job hosting Super Bowl 56 at the remarkable SoFi Stadium and we are confident that Super Bowl 61 will be even more unforgettable," said NFL commissioner Roger Goodell in a statement.

It will be the ninth time that Super Bowl is held in the greater LA area, per NFL.com.
