New Amsterdam Hospital could be reopening soon.

A spinoff of the popular medical drama New Amsterdam, which aired last year, is currently in the works at NBC according to Deadline. The sequel, created by David Schulner, will focus on Dr. Max Goodwin's (played by Ryan Eggold) daughter, Luna Goodwin, as she steps into her father's role at the hospital.

A sequel to the original show New Amsterdam is in the works with a working title of New Amsterdam: Tomorrow, set 30 years after the original series. The plot details have been kept secret, but Deadline has mentioned that the focus will be on how AI impacts the hospital system.

In the series finale of New Amsterdam, fans caught a glimpse of Molly Griggs as Luna in a flash-forward. It has not been confirmed if the actress will return to play Luna in the spinoff. Schulner, the show's creator, shared that the idea to feature an older Luna in the final scene was suggested by his 11-year-old daughter.

Schulner shared in a January 2023 interview with Entertainment Weekly that he had initially delegated school work while focusing on writing. A week later, writer Laura Valdivia pitched him the same ending. Shortly after, writer Erika Green Swafford suggested the idea of Luna returning as the medical director. Within three weeks, all writers had pitched the same ending, leading Schulner to believe it was the perfect conclusion for the show.

The showrunner added that it was a satisfying full circle moment to end the series with Luna speaking in the auditorium, just as her dad did in the pilot.

The pilot episode of New Amsterdam began with Max in the auditorium, where he shared, "My sister died here, I grew up here and this is why I wanted to work here." Luna, another character, also expressed her connection to the place by saying, "My mother died here. I grew up here and that’s why I wanted to be a doctor here."

New Amsterdam concluded its five-season run with a two-hour finale in January. NBC decided on a shortened final season of 13 episodes for the show. During its time on the air, the series gained a dedicated following, with NBC reporting an average of nearly 10 million viewers in 2020.

While talking to ET to promote the final episode in January 2023, Schulner shared that knowing the show was ending felt like both a blessing and a curse. He mentioned feeling cursed because there were more stories to tell and places to explore, with expectations of a few more years ahead. However, he also considered it a blessing because they were able to conclude the show on their own terms, a rare opportunity in the industry.

Schulner expressed that he wasn't quite ready to bid farewell just yet, stating, "We're always looking for more, never truly satisfied." He humorously added, "But seriously, don't hesitate to reach out. We'll even give you our phone numbers. Call us up, and we'll gladly consider a reboot."

The original series captivated audiences with its heartwarming stories and relatable characters, and the sequel has the potential to continue that legacy while exploring new frontiers in medical technology.

The focus on Dr. Max Goodwin's daughter, Luna, as she steps into her father's role at the hospital, adds a personal touch to the narrative. The glimpse of Luna in the flash-forward during the original series finale hinted at her potential, and it will be intriguing to see how she navigates the challenges and triumphs of being a medical director.
