In 2020, a lesser-known action-thriller featuring Nikolaj Coster-Waldau from Game of Thrones has recently made it onto Netflix's Top 10 most-watched list. Hailing originally from Denmark, Coster-Waldau gained worldwide fame for his role as Jaime Lannister in HBO's Game of Thrones.
He portrayed Jaime in all eight seasons of the fantasy series, which is adapted from George R.R. Martin’s A Song of Ice and Fire novels.
Since then, Coster-Waldau has featured in various film and television projects, one of which has recently gained a new audience through Netflix.
Game of Thrones star’s “hidden gem” thriller climbs Netflix chart
The production in question is The Silencing, which claimed the number two slot on Netflix’s Top 10 most-watched movies in the US chart for December 1.
The rest of the chart breaks down as follows:
Leo
The Silencing
The Secret: Dare to Dream
Best. Christmas. Ever!
Minions

The Silencing's sudden increase in audience interest is likely a pleasant surprise for Coster-Waldau, as the thriller was mostly overlooked when it was released in July 2020. The film received negative reviews from critics, which hindered its success. Additionally, The Silencing was one of many 2020 films affected by the COVID-19 pandemic, which impacted its theatrical release. However, the movie performed better in the video-on-demand market, becoming the top rental title in the US in August 2020.
The divergence in responses from critics and casual viewers to The Silencing is evident in the social media endorsements from Netflix subscribers that propelled the film into the Top 10 on the platform.
Adam Sandler animated comedy tops Netflix’s Top 10
"Just finished watching The Silencing on Netflix last night," shared one user. "It's such a great movie from start to finish. A hidden gem." "I thought The Silencing on Netflix was really good," added another. "I should be sleeping but The Silencing on Netflix is really good," wrote a third.
Despite the belated wave of appreciation, Netflix's number one film, Leo, remains undefeated. This animated musical-comedy, co-written by and starring Adam Sandler, has held the top spot on the US charts since its debut on November 21. The family-friendly film, also featuring Bill Burr, Cecily Strong, Jason Alexander, and Rob Schneider, has been warmly embraced by critics.

The Silencing's sudden increase in popularity is likely due to word-of-mouth recommendations on social media.
