Miyo Saimori, the protagonist of My Happy Marriage, grows up feeling worthless, but discovers she has a supernatural ability called Dream-Sight.
Being a Dream-Sight Medium holds great significance as it is a unique power exclusive to females in the Usuba bloodline, and Miyo happens to be the first to possess this ability in over a century. Despite her mother sealing away her Dream-Sight, Miyo eventually embraces it to rescue her husband and enhance their bond of love.
In the supernatural romance "My Happy Marriage," the protagonist, Miyo Saimori, grows up with a deep belief in her own worthlessness. Miyo's life mirrors that of Cinderella - she faces constant criticism from her stepmother and stepsister, has an absent father, and eventually escapes her home by marrying a handsome man. However, Miyo's marriage does not initially resemble a fairytale ending, as her husband, Kiyoka Kudou, is known for being cold and scaring away potential partners.
In a world where everyone possesses special abilities, Miyo feels powerless as she lacks any unique gifts or talents. This sense of helplessness engulfs her identity as a person. Suddenly, everything changes when she discovers that she has always had a supernatural ability hidden within her: Dream-Sight, a power sealed away by her late mother.
What is Dream-Sight?
Throughout the anime, Miyo possesses vivid and unsettling dreams, which she later discovers are a manifestation of her Dream-Sight ability. This unique power enables her to perceive the true world while she sleeps. Within her dreams, Miyo can witness events unfolding in different locations and time periods, manipulate the dreamscape, and locate misplaced objects. Strangely enough, she is also able to manipulate the thoughts of other individuals, a remarkable feat considering that most supernatural abilities tend to focus on Grotesqueries. Miyo's possession of such an extraordinary ability can be attributed to her Usuba lineage, which is known for harboring rare and exceptional gifts.
Why is Being a Dream-Sight Medium so Important?
Dream-Sight is a unique ability that is exclusive to females within the Usuba bloodline. The rarity of telepathic girls and gift-users makes someone possessing the precious Dream Sight seem highly improbable. Prior to Miyo, a Dream-Sight Medium had not been witnessed in more than a hundred years.
Since Dream-Sight is such a potent ability, it has the potential for both great good and great evil. Even individuals with the purest hearts can fall victim to exploitation by those with malicious intent. These individuals, known as Mediums, have the ability to render even the most skilled soldier ineffective, making them an extremely dangerous force in times of war. It is the fear of this exploitation that led Sumi Usuba, Miyo's mother, to seal this ability away from her.
Miyo's Sealed Ability
In the penultimate installment of My Happy Marriage, Miyo uncovers the reason behind Sumi's decision to disable her Dream-Sight, a revelation that stems from her grandfather Yoshirou Usuba. Prior to Miyo's birth, the Tsuruki Trading company, owned by the Usuba family, encountered a significant setback when they failed to establish a successful partnership with a crucial business ally, resulting in a crippling financial crisis and an immense accumulation of debt. In their direst moment, the Saimori family extended a proposition to the Usuba clan: if Sumi agreed to marry into their family, they would provide substantial financial assistance to alleviate their crushing debt burden. Despite relentless persistence from the Saimoris, Yoshirou consistently declined their offer.
Sumi made the decision to accept the proposal without her father's knowledge. This infuriated Yoshirou because she would be passing on the Usuba bloodline to another family and endangering her health, which was already declining. Sumi explained that the Usubas had no choice but to accept the proposal. Once she married Shinichi Saimori, her contact with her father was completely severed, and they became isolated from each other.
Miyo, using her Dream-Sight, glimpsed into the past to witness her mother's wedding day. The marriage was not only a political arrangement, but there was also pressure for Sumi to bear a child with powerful Usuba blood and Dream-Sight abilities. After giving birth to a baby girl, Sumi discovered that the child had the gift of Dream Sight. One day, she overheard the Saimori men discussing Miyo's abilities, still uncertain about them. They emphasized the importance of obtaining her abilities quickly, as failure to do so would result in the Saimoris being demoted. They mentioned their efforts in acquiring a vial of the Usuba bloodline and stressed the urgency for Shinichi to impregnate Sumi before her declining health took her life, which could happen soon.
When Sumi discovers her impending mortality, she anticipates that signs of Miyo's extraordinary abilities will soon surface. Consequently, she fears that Miyo will be ruthlessly exploited for her gifts. In her efforts to safeguard Miyo, Sumi sorrowfully prepares to constrain her capabilities, apologizing to her child for the pain she may endure as she navigates through life without her innate powers. Sumi is tormented by the possibility that Miyo may feel inadequate and wrongly blame herself for lacking these exceptional talents. Nevertheless, in order to ensure her daughter's safety, Sumi makes the difficult decision to temporarily conceal Miyo's gift, even if it means sacrificing her upbringing.
