Warning! Spoilers ahead for the Frasier reboot pilot.
Summary
Frasier's revival discloses the unfortunate news of Martin Crane's demise, paying tribute to the enduring impact of his character.
As for Frasier's romantic life, his relationship with Charlotte has come to an end, proving that his grand gesture in the finale of the original show was short-lived.
Frasier agrees to lecture at Harvard in an attempt to mend his strained relationship with his son, Freddy, and settles into life in Boston. The first two episodes of the Frasier reboot introduce Frasier Crane's new life in Boston, with Kelsey Grammer returning to his iconic role on TV after almost two decades. Bringing back the show presented challenges due to the absence of many original characters, but Grammer and his team were able to overcome these obstacles and successfully begin the story of the reboot with a two-episode premiere on Paramount+.
8 Frasier's Reboot Reveals Martin Crane Has Passed Away
"The Good Father" and "Moving In" are the episodes that mark the beginning of Frasier's new life in Boston. These outings not only establish the show's premise and introduce new characters, but they also provide an update on Frasier's experiences over the past two decades. His journey has been a mixture of personal victories and setbacks, offering insight into the lives of the Cranes since he left Settle 19 years ago. As a result, the Frasier reboot pilot episodes on Paramount+ offer a rich and extensive narrative.
Paramount+ wastes no time addressing one of the biggest question marks surrounding the Frasier reboot: the fate of Martin Crane. The passing of John Mahoney in 2018 presented a significant obstacle to the revival, as it meant the absence of the Crane family patriarch. However, Grammer, who not only stars in the show but also serves as its producer, made a promise to honor the legacy of Mahoney and Martin, and that promise is fulfilled in multiple ways. Prior to his journey to Boston, Frasier attended his father's funeral in Seattle, during which Daphne delivered a heartfelt speech. The entire service was a beautiful tribute, but unfortunately, Freddy was unable to be present.
7 Frasier's Reboot Confirms He & Charlotte Broke Up
Arriving in Boston, Frasier is warmly welcomed by Alan Cornwall, a long-time friend and new character in the Frasier reboot. As they catch up, their conversation becomes an expository scene, beginning with Martin's funeral. The discussion naturally transitions to Frasier's relationship status with Charlotte. Grammer's character reveals that Charlotte left him, but the show doesn't delve deeper, leaving unanswered questions about the reasons behind their split. This also confirms that Frasier's grand romantic gesture of following Charlotte to Chicago in the original show's finale paid off, but unfortunately, it wasn't enough for a happily ever after.
6 Frasier Was A Successful TV Show Host In Chicago
Despite his popularity on the radio and his stable financial situation in Seattle, Frasier made the decision to accept a lucrative job offer in San Francisco and became the host of a television show in the original series finale. However, being a romantic at heart, he ultimately chose to abandon his career prospects to pursue Charlotte in Seattle, firmly believing that she was his soulmate. While Frasier did manage to win Charlotte's heart (although their relationship eventually came to an end), he also secured a similar television opportunity in Chicago where he hosted his own show. Following a recurring theme in his life, Frasier expressed in the pilot episode of the reboot that it was once again time for him to move on, and so he did.
5 Freddy Drops Out Of Harvard To Become A Firefighter
The main conflict in the Frasier reboot centers around Frasier's strained relationship with his son, Freddy. This dynamic might surprise loyal fans of the original series, as the father-son duo had a strong connection back then. However, their falling out stems from Freddy's choice to abandon his studies at Harvard, despite excelling academically. The young Crane confesses that he never truly felt like he belonged in that prestigious institution. Frasier struggles to comprehend this decision, but outwardly supports his son's pursuit. Undoubtedly, this contentious issue will continue to resurface throughout the remainder of the season.
4 Frasier Takes A Job Lecturing At Harvard
After Martin's funeral, Frasier decides not to make a pit stop in Boston. This changes when Alan asks him if he can guest lecture his Harvard class, to which Frasier agrees. Following his successful lecture, Olivia, the head of the psychology department at the Ivy League university, offers Frasier a job at his alma mater. Fueled by his desire to mend his strained relationship with his adult son, Freddy, Frasier abandons his Paris plans and instead settles back in Boston as Alan's fellow lecturer at Harvard.
3 Freddy Told People His Dad Was Dead
As the son of a successful TV host, Freddy enjoyed certain advantages. However, he was also burdened with the drawbacks that came along with it, which he preferred to avoid. Taking inspiration from his father's actions, Freddy went so far as to claim that his dad had passed away. Normally, such a declaration would deeply wound any parent. But in Frasier's case, he couldn't really reprimand his son, given that he himself had falsely declared Martin's demise during his tenure in Cheers. Eventually, the truth unravels when Frasier and Freddy unexpectedly cross paths at Mahoney's, the newly renovated bar in the Frasier reboot.
2 Frasier Buys The Apartment Opposite Freddy, Who Moves In With Him
After almost two decades in Chicago, Frasier now enjoys immense wealth in the reboot.
1 Daphne & Niles' Son, David Studies At Harvard
His ability to effortlessly secure an apartment in Boston, directly opposite Freddy's, serves as undeniable evidence of his staggering affluence. However, rather than simply acquiring a single unit, Frasier takes it a step further by purchasing the entire building, using it as leverage to compel his son to move in with him. Interestingly enough, this situation presents a significant irony considering Frasier's own past experience of reluctantly accepting his father's presence thirty years ago. He seemingly believes that if this unconventional approach proved successful in resolving the strained bond between himself and Martin, it could potentially yield similar results with Freddy.
While David Hyde Pierce's character Niles and Jane Leeves' character Daphne were initially invited to reprise their roles, they ultimately declined Kelsey Grammer's offer. As a result, the Paramount+ project underwent a narrative shift, bringing Frasier back to Boston. This decision helps to rationalize their absence. However, fans of the Crane-Moon family need not worry, as the Frasier reboot features Niles and Daphne's son, David. In the pilot episode, David accompanies Frasier on his return to Boston. A Harvard student and one of Alan's pupils, it's clear that David will play a prominent role in the new show, much like his parents did in the original series.
