According to Reuters, two trains collided in southeast India on Sunday, resulting in the death of at least 10 individuals and injuries to 27 others. The incident occurred in the Vizianagaram district of Andhra Pradesh when a train headed from Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh, to Rayagada, Odisha, came to a stop due to an overhead cable break and was struck by an approaching train.
According to an official source, the collision caused two coaches on the stationary train, which were carrying over 90 people, to derail. The country's railway ministry issued a statement indicating that a preliminary investigation suggests the collision was a result of "human error" caused by the stationary train overshooting a signal.
The collision on Sunday occurred only four months after a different train accident in Odisha, which resulted in three trains colliding. This previous incident tragically claimed the lives of 275 people and left over 1,000 individuals injured.
Currently, rescue operations are in progress at the site of the accident, and Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw stated that all of the injured individuals have been transferred to hospitals.
The Chief Ministers Office of Andhra Pradesh stated on X that immediate relief measures had been instructed to officials, ensuring prompt medical attention to the injured. Additionally, neighboring districts were also advised to send first responders to the scene.
