Mortal Kombat 1 Gamers Outraged by Controversial Seasonal Fatality Microtransaction

Mortal Kombat 1 fans express frustration as the game introduces an exclusive seasonal fatality, sparking outrage due to its premium microtransaction model

Highlights

Mortal Kombat 1 has a new Halloween fatality that players can purchase as a premium microtransaction, causing frustration and anger among fans.

Fans have likened the decision to a free-to-play game, prompting calls for boycotting the premium shop and condemning the move as unethical. Additionally, the game's release has been marred by graphical glitches, technical difficulties, and an excessive dependence on microtransactions for cosmetic items and skins.

Mortal Kombat 1 introduces a special Halloween fatality that has disappointed players, as it can only be obtained through a premium microtransaction. Despite being highly acclaimed and widely praised, Mortal Kombat 1 has faced some issues since its launch. The Switch version, in particular, suffered from graphical problems, including character models lacking detail and animations, as well as various technical glitches. Additionally, many fans have expressed their dissatisfaction with the game's heavy reliance on microtransactions for cosmetic items, such as skins. One specific incident involved the requirement of purchasing a DLC character in order to unlock a chest in the standard Invasions game mode. The frustration among fans has now escalated with the introduction of a new seasonal fatality.

After fans discovered an upcoming Halloween Fatality, WB Support confirmed that the feature would be available for purchase through the Mortal Kombat 1 in-game shop later this week, with an expected arrival date of October 27. This announcement caused disappointment among players, who took to social media to express their displeasure at being forced to buy a fatality. While many criticized the game's $70 price tag, some had already spent even more on the Premium and Collectors Editions. Some players, such as KP, compared this move to what a free-to-play game would do, and also expressed disappointment that Mortal Kombat 1 had less content than previous installments.

Unsurprisingly, the Mortal Kombat subReddit saw a significant increase in activity following this news, with players encouraging others to protest by refusing to make the purchase and referring to the move as "scummy" in general. Given the wide range of currencies available in Mortal Kombat 1, some fans questioned why the fatality couldn't have been offered in exchange for Seasonal Koins rather than premium Dragon Krystals.

Unfortunately, this is not the first issue that has caused frustration among the gaming community for the game. Recently, an update was made to Mortal Kombat 1 which aimed to fix certain issues and balance the characters. However, this resulted in several popular choices being significantly weakened. One of these choices, Cyrax, who is highly favored by players, was particularly impacted by the update. Additionally, characters such as Baraka, Mileena, and Scorpion also experienced nerfs. Scorpion, in particular, was already considered to be a weaker option due to his lack of high damage output, so players were left puzzled as to why he was further weakened.

Mortal Kombat 1 can currently be played on PC, PS5, Switch, and Xbox Series X/S.
