Samuel L. Jackson delves into the transformation of Nick Fury in Secret Invasion, detailing the profound effects the Blip has had on the seasoned S.H.I.E.L.D. leader. From the inception of the agency in the MCU to his recruitment of Tony Stark for the Avengers, Fury has always been portrayed as an omnipotent figure. However, Captain Marvel offered a glimpse into a younger, more vulnerable Fury, and now Secret Invasion aims to delve even deeper into the enigmatic spy's psyche.
In an exclusive interview with Screen Rant, Jackson sheds light on the aftermath of the Blip and its impact on Fury. He reveals that there is a perception among people that Fury has lost some of his edge, and this newfound vulnerability adds a human element to his character that has remained unexplored thus far. Read Jackson's full statement below:
I had initial discussions with the writer, Brian Tucker, which was great. We delved into various aspects such as the identity of certain characters and the impact of the Blip on Nick Fury. This prolonged absence made him vulnerable, challenging his all-knowing persona. It's interesting to explore this side of Nick, as it adds a touch of humanity that hasn't been explored before. In Captain Marvel, we first see him as a young FBI agent, still untainted by the harsh realities of life. However, the Blip shakes him to the core, leading to his extended absence.
He believes in his own importance so much that he devises a plan to have Talos pose as him. When he eventually returns, he believes he has successfully treated himself in a way that enables him to rejoin the competition. However, everyone around him can see that he is not the same person. Everyone, except himself, recognizes that he is not who he claims to be.
Secret Invasion Shows A New Side To Nick Fury
It was evident in Spider-Man: Far From Home that Fury underwent a transformation as he was absent from Earth when a significant threat emerged, delegating Talos to act as his doppelganger. Talos, in a departure from Fury's usual approach, placed trust in a stranger, resulting in the exposure of Peter Parker's true identity. The Blip caught Fury off guard, as it was an unforeseen event that left him at the mercy of others who initially failed to address the situation and subsequently reintroduced him to a completely altered world.
In Secret Invasion, Fury's disappearance has resulted in a loss of identity, something that will be explored in the storyline. Known for his enigmatic nature, Fury's character will be peeled back to reveal a more human side, shedding light on the depths of his humanity. This journey may serve as a catalyst for Fury to rediscover himself and determine his desired path moving forward.
Having encountered the Skrull in Captain Marvel, Fury possesses a wealth of knowledge about them, surpassing that of most individuals. However, with S.H.I.E.L.D. disbanded and the Avengers scattered, Fury finds himself without his usual sources of power and support. As Secret Invasion unfolds, Fury is likely to confront the Skrull rebellion alone, seeking redemption for past errors and carving out his role in the post-Blip world.
