The cast members of Star Trek: Lower Decks season 4 discuss the exciting changes that await the Ensigns of the USS Cerritos. Ahead of the season premiere on September 7th, actors Tawny Newsome, Jack Quaid, Noël Wells, and Eugene Cordero shared their thoughts on their characters' promotions in season 4. These interviews took place before the SAG-AFTRA strikes. Explore their insights on how the Lower Deckers will rise through the ranks of Starfleet.
Jack Quaid (Bradward Boimler):
I'm thrilled about the promotion of the Lower Deckers. Boimler is taking charge of his first away mission, and needless to say, he's feeling quite anxious. His utmost priority is to ensure the safety of everyone involved. Ultimately, he realizes the importance of placing his trust in his friends and the entire process.
Tawny Newsome (Beckett Mariner):
Attempting to return the promotion happened numerous times, and I comprehend her reasoning. However, she eventually embraces it, acknowledging that she can continue pursuing her interests, making a positive difference, and maintaining her mischievous nature. She firmly believes, "I am still a member of the lower ranks; I am still a tenacious underdog."
Noël Wells (D’Vana Tendi):
Tendi is brimming with excitement about her promotion. Ever since she joined Starfleet, she had yearned to be recognized and now she's discovering a hidden reservoir of power within herself. This promotion feels like the next logical step in her journey of diligent labor.
Eugene Cordero (as Samanthan Rutherford) seems to have an apprehension towards progressing or getting promoted too quickly. I believe he would be concerned about being relocated to another ship or being placed in an unfamiliar environment where he would have to take on a leadership role. This is a common concern among all of them, but I feel that Rutherford would struggle the most with it.
Star Trek: Lower Decks Season 4 Promotions Explained
Ensigns Mariner, Boimler, Tendi, and Rutherford's promotions on the USS Cerritos won't change their roles as Lower Deckers. As Ensigns, the next step up for them would be Lieutenant, junior grade, which is still a relatively low position. Despite the promotion, they would still be responsible for much of the less glamorous tasks on the ship. However, the promotion does come with advantages, like Boimler leading his own away mission. It could also mean that the Lower Deckers would no longer have to share bunks in the hallway and instead have their own quarters.
Additionally, Boimler and Mariner recently visited the USS Enterprise in the 23rd century, under the command of Captain Christopher Pike, but they are not allowed to discuss this due to temporal protocols. Another twist to the Lower Deckers' promotion is the introduction of Provisional Ensign T'Lyn to the cast of Star Trek: Lower Decks season 4. T'Lyn, a no-nonsense Vulcan, now finds herself taking orders from the higher-ranked Mariner, Boimler, Tendi, and Rutherford, which sets the stage for comedic possibilities.
