Warning: Spoilers ahead for Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 2, episode 3 - "Tomorrow and Tomorrow and Tomorrow." In this episode, the iconic villain returns with a unique twist. Despite being early in the season, Strange New Worlds has already demonstrated its commitment to compelling storytelling. The premiere and second episode were both outstanding, and episode 3, "Tomorrow and Tomorrow and Tomorrow," continues this trend with an exhilarating time-travel mission for Lt. La'an Noonien-Singh (Christina Chong).
In this episode, La'an finds herself trapped in an alternate timeline after her own reality is erased by an unknown attack in Earth's past. Teaming up with Captain James T. Kirk (Paul Wesley) from the new reality, La'an must thwart the attack and restore the original timeline to prevent a grim future for Earth. Episode 3 of Strange New Worlds is full of surprises and unexpected developments, but perhaps the most significant twist occurs when La'an must prevent the death of a child held captive in a secret laboratory - a young boy who happens to be one of Star Trek's most famous villains.
Young Khan In Strange New Worlds Season 2 Explained
In Strange New Worlds season 2, episode 3, Khan Noonien-Singh (Desmond Sivan) returns to the Star Trek franchise. This marks the first time his childhood is explored. La'an prevents the time-traveling Romulan terrorist, Sera (Adelaide Kane), from killing Khan. She comes face-to-face with Khan, her direct ancestor, and catches a glimpse of his life as a genetic experiment in a secret underground lab. The young and frightened boy portrayed in this episode contrasts greatly with the Khan (Ricardo Montalban) introduced in Star Trek: The Original Series. However, this glimpse into Khan's origins is what makes his appearance in SNW so captivating.
In Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 2, Kirk does not meet his future arch-nemesis. Kirk is killed by Sera before La'an intervenes. Fortunately, Kirk's death does not create a paradox since the version of him that is killed was never meant to exist. Nevertheless, both Kirk's death and the encounter with Khan deeply affect La'an. Saving Khan's life, despite knowing his future actions, poses a difficult decision for her. However, allowing Khan to die would have resulted in her own demise and the eradication of any possibility for the Federation's existence. Ultimately, La'an makes the right choice, but the episode reveals her heartbreak in the face of these events.
Strange New Worlds May Have Answered Picard Season 2's Khan Tease
Star Trek: Strange New Worlds sheds new light on Khan's life and alters the Star Trek timeline, potentially resolving the lingering question raised by Star Trek: Picard season 2. In the season finale of Picard's second season, Adam Soong, portrayed by Brent Spiner, discovers a file labeled "Project Khan" after his daughter, Kore Soong (Isa Briones), deletes the remainder of his life's work in genetic experimentation. The file dates back to 1996 and suggests that Soong aims to utilize its information to carry on his genetic modification research, which could have disastrous consequences akin to the outcome of Khan and his fellow Augments.
While the Project Khan tease may have foreshadowed Arik Soong's appearance in Star Trek: Enterprise, it is plausible that the presence of Khan in the second episode of Strange New Worlds' second season is a direct result of Adam Soong's Project Khan. This may provide an answer to one major question left unresolved by Star Trek: Picard. As the latest episode of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds has reignited interest in Khan, it is possible that a comprehensive explanation of Khan's revised timeline will be revealed in the future.
Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 2 streams Thursdays on Paramount+.
