Warning: This post contains spoilers for episode 2 of Secret Invasion titled "Promises."
Phase 5's Secret Invasion has unveiled a significant revelation that may offer an explanation for a long-standing mystery surrounding the X-Men in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Ever since their introduction in Captain Marvel, the shape-shifting Skrulls have been secretly residing on Earth. However, it is in episode 2 of Secret Invasion, titled "Promises," where the full extent of their integration into human society is finally revealed. This series delves deeper into the Skrull mythology within the MCU, featuring not only Ben Mendelsohn's character Talos, but also exploring a faction of rebellious Skrulls led by Gravik, portrayed by Kingsley Ben-Adir. These Skrulls have set their sights on claiming Earth as their own, and their numbers suggest they might just succeed in their mission.
Secret Invasion episode 2 witnessed a captivating interaction between Talos and Samuel L. Jackson's Nick Fury aboard a train traveling from Moscow to Warsaw. The two engaged in a thought-provoking game of "tell me something I don't know," during which Talos astoundingly disclosed the presence of not just a handful, but an astounding million Skrull refugees who have seamlessly integrated themselves into humanity. This staggering revelation holds immense implications for the future of the MCU, leaving us questioning the trustworthiness of those around us. However, it also sets the stage for the highly anticipated debut of Marvel Studios' beloved superhero squad, as fans eagerly ponder the whereabouts of the X-Men and the world's mutants.
Secret Invasion's Skrull Reveal Makes The MCU's X-Men Problem Easier To Fix
Nick Fury's initial reaction to the discovery of a million Skrulls living among humans wasn't exactly friendly. However, this revelation opens up the perfect opportunity to address the whereabouts of mutants as well. Disney's acquisition of Fox in 2019 has sparked questions about how mutants and the X-Men will enter the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). Considering that a million Skrulls have managed to remain hidden on Earth for an extended period, it's plausible that mutants have been doing the same. If mutants have been secretly existing alongside humans, much like the Skrulls, and the X-Men have been operating without detection, their introduction into the MCU could be seamless and require minimal explanation.
Why The X-Men Could Be Hiding In The MCU
Even though the Skrull reveal in Secret Invasion could easily integrate the X-Men into the MCU, an explanation is needed for why mutants have remained hidden for so long. If it's revealed that mutants have existed in the background of the MCU, it would require an explanation for their absence during world-threatening events like Avengers: Age of Ultron, Avengers: Infinity War, and Avengers: Endgame. This issue mirrors the challenge faced by the Eternals in Phase 4, who lived on Earth for centuries without assisting the Earth's Mightiest Heroes.
In Marvel Comics, mutant-centric stories often highlight the discrimination faced by mutants at the hands of humanity. Their unique powers make them outcasts, and the fear of anyone potentially becoming a mutant leads to constant persecution. This fear would certainly provide enough incentive for the mutants in the MCU to remain hidden until the time is right to reveal themselves, although the exact timing remains uncertain. It's possible that the mutants and X-Men in the MCU have taken a similar approach to the Skrulls in Secret Invasion, quietly living among humanity.
