In an interview with Screen Rant, director Ali Selim discusses the game-changing finale of Secret Invasion. Selim shares insights into the groundwork laid for future MCU projects, such as Armor Wars, and speculates on the potential of President Ritson as a new villain in the MCU. He also delves into the experience of working with Olivia Colman and sheds light on the true motives behind Gravik's plans. It's important to note that this article was written during the 2023 WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes, and acknowledges the instrumental contribution of the writers and actors from both unions in bringing this show to life.
Ali Selim Talks Secret Invasion Finale
Screen Rant: Secret Invasion's finale was absolutely mind-blowing! The way episodes 4, 5, and 6 unfolded was truly explosive. Could you shed some light on Gravik's relationship with Fury and what motivated him to seek revenge by wiping out his own kin?
Ali Selim: It's a shame Kingsley couldn't join us for this conversation; he seems preoccupied with other matters. Kingsley and I delved into extensive discussions regarding the parallels and disparities between terrorism and sociopathy. While I don't want to delve too deep into the psychological or political aspects, I believe Gravik's actions were driven by a profound sense of betrayal from his father figure, rather than a profound desire to secure a homeland for his people. This led to a singular focus on sociopathic tendencies, which greatly contrasted with the notion of exterminating his own kin.
He never considered it. His intention wasn't to find a home; rather, he sought to create a marketable façade, much like our government does in justifying wars with appealing labels. He presented a marketable concept of "Join me and find a home," when in reality, his sole motive was to seek vengeance against Fury for the harm inflicted upon him during his childhood. Kingsley skillfully portrays the complexity of this character and delivers a remarkable performance.
Absolutely! Kingsley's portrayal in this role is truly remarkable. Two significant characters in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, who were allies of Nick Fury, met their demise. Can you elaborate on your collaboration with Kevin Feige in devising the deaths of Maria Hill and Talos, as well as the prolonged abduction of Rhodey?
Ali Selim: My apologies for not meeting your expectations, but when I joined the team, those decisions had already been finalized. Although I'm unsure of the reasoning behind them, it is my responsibility to ensure they evoke genuine emotions and create intense moments. And I believe I have achieved that. My interactions with Kevin mainly revolve around the directive of eliminating Maria Hill and ensuring it is done well. Therefore, I respond with enthusiasm and say, "Great."
Ali Selim expresses gratitude for Kyle Bradstreet, the creator of the series, and praises his ability to find remarkable aspects. Selim acknowledges not being aware of the specific instructions given to Bradstreet, but recognizes that he crafted an exceptional script for the death of Maria Hill. This script allowed Selim and Cobie to collaborate effectively. Selim further commends Cobie for her willingness to fully commit to any creative decision, even if it means sacrificing her successful role. He believes she delivered an outstanding performance.
Certainly. Could you address how the real world impacts this sci-fi series?
Ali Selim: Absolutely. In this series, we delve into Nick Fury's personal journey. It's a relatable tale that centers around his quest to rediscover his place in the world after experiencing the blip, vanishing into space for three years, and subsequently aging. What is his true calling? How can he regain his confidence and charisma? These are universal aspirations. Moreover, how does he navigate the feeling of being different from others in today's society?
Throughout the entire journey, the idea of this being a superhero or a sci-fi tale never crossed our minds. Instead, we viewed it as a stepping stone towards a more relatable and human-centered narrative. Even when delving into the realms of Talos and G'aih, our focus was on exploring the humanity and inherent human desires present in these extraterrestrial beings, be it Skrulls or aliens.
The president's speech serves as a reflection of the prevalent trend of exaggerated reactions driven by fear in the real world.
Ali Selim: The situation is quite real! When faced with the fork in the road alongside Ritson, you have the option of him accepting the Skrulls and providing them a home, which would be a somewhat idealistic ending to the drama, or him acknowledging that this battle will continue. Currently, we are living in a world where otherness is prevalent, and it is challenging to find common ground despite our desires. In my opinion, it is more honest to acknowledge and state that this battle will persist.
Do you perceive President Ritson as a villain within the MCU now?
Ali Selim ponders the possibilities of what could happen next with Ritson. Will he learn a valuable lesson and change his ways? Or will he persist in his current behavior? Perhaps this could mark the end of Ritson's journey. As for myself, I am not heavily involved in the decision-making process. I have received certain requirements for the upcoming movie. It is imperative that Nick Fury's character is placed in a space setting. Additionally, for the next phase, Rhodey's ability to walk must be impaired for the purpose of Armor Wars. Apart from these details, my main focus lies on the creation of the six episodes contained within these very walls.
When it comes to those six episodes, what intrigued me the most was delving into Nick Fury's character. This show revolves around him, after all. The dynamic between him and Priscilla is something I truly admire. What aspect of exploring Fury's personal side excites you the most?
Ali Selim: In my opinion, this is something that has never been explored in the MCU. I find the complex, emotional, and heartfelt inner life of Nick Fury to be absolutely captivating. Instead of focusing on who can defeat whom, my storytelling background and interests lie more in these internal struggles. Sam and Charlayne [Woodard] have a longstanding history together, having known each other and worked together for decades. It was truly rewarding to collaborate with both of them on this level. They bring a depth and subtlety to the MCU that goes beyond the traditional dichotomy of good versus evil.
Olivia Colman's portrayal of Fallsworth in this series is truly remarkable. Could you discuss your experience collaborating with her to shape this character, and the unique contributions she made to the role that went beyond the written script?
Ali Selim: Certainly, actors often bring an extraordinary brilliance that extends beyond the confines of the page. Writers undoubtedly perform remarkable work, uncovering the core truths, rhythm, and fluidity of the story. However, when an actor steps into the scene, it transforms into something entirely new. I'm not referring to ad-libbing or making changes, but rather to the distinction between a seed and a fully ripe apple hanging from a tree. It's a magical occurrence, and Olivia Colman's talent is truly incredible.
Her process is both intriguing and uncomplicated. Somehow, she uncovers the essence of truth within the words and delivers them without unnecessary complications. It's a straightforward, impactful approach. Collaborating with her on this particular project has been fascinating. The decision to cast Olivia Colman, a celebrated Oscar-winning actress, as a delightfully sinister MI6 agent, is itself a subversive choice.
And I believe she thoroughly enjoyed it. In one scene, she shoots Victor. Rosa, the red-haired scientist portrayed by Katie Finneran, is accompanied by a man who may be her husband or a Skrull accomplice. He is shot in the head, resulting in a burst of purple blood. Olivia turned to me after that scene and exclaimed, "These are so much fun! I wish I could have one on The Crown. Take that, Charles."
