During the course of Loki season 2, one of Loki's powers from the Marvel Cinematic Universe undergoes a substantial enhancement, making it even more formidable. With the intention of rescuing the Time Variance Authority from impending destruction, the protagonist Loki (played by Tom Hiddleston) and Agent Mobius (portrayed by Owen Wilson) embark on a mission to locate Sylvie (portrayed by Sophia Di Martino), the variant of Loki who eliminated the TVA's founder, He Who Remains (played by Jonathan Majors), in the season 1 finale. In pursuit of this objective, Loki and Mobius uncover an impressive exhibition of the God of Mischief's magical abilities.
In Loki season 2, episode 2, Loki and Mobius encounter Hunter X-5 (portrayed by Rafael Casal), who has defected from the TVA and established himself as a famous actor named "Brad Wolfe" within the Sacred Timeline. However, before going rogue, he managed to uncover Sylvie's whereabouts, prompting Loki and Mobius to apprehend him and bring him back to the TVA for interrogation. Despite X-5's attempts to flee, he proved no match for Loki and his impressive magical abilities. Notably, Loki has acquired a newly enhanced power that has significantly increased his prowess as a sorcerer within the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Loki Season 2 Changes His Illusion Powers
Known as duplication casting, these specific Loki illusions are commonly referred to as projections resembling holograms, lacking the ability to interact with individuals or their surroundings. Instances of this magical skill have been showcased in various Marvel Cinematic Universe films, notably in the Thor series and prominently in 2012's Avengers, where Loki employs this power to deceive his Asgardian sibling. During the confrontation aboard the SHIELD helicarrier, when the God of Thunder assaults Loki, the latter effortlessly evades the attack as Thor unintentionally passes through him, eventually finding himself confined in a cell intended for the Hulk. At this moment, Loki jests, questioning if there will ever be a time when Thor does not succumb to his mesmerizing holographic illusions.
Nonetheless, in a striking divergence from his conventional duplication casting method, Loki exhibits a remarkable ability when he captures X-5/Brad Wolfe in 1972 London. In this instance, he projects two shadowy versions of himself that possess the capability to physically restrain Wolfe, pinning him against the wall of an alleyway. This noteworthy deviation in Loki's duplication casting highlights a departure from the usual intangibility previously observed. Furthermore, it is equally impressive that the God of Mischief is able to flawlessly duplicate himself twice in addition to the shadow counterparts.
