Amanda's Role in the Saw Franchise Explained
Originally introduced in a brief cameo in Saw, Shawnee Smith's character Amanda has undergone a remarkable journey, appearing in three subsequent sequels and gaining recognition as one of the franchise's most intricate and adored personalities. Initially, Amanda's cameo in Saw occurred during the investigation into Jigsaw's modus operandi, during which she provided a testimony regarding the harrowing trap she endured. At that time, she stood as the sole survivor known to have escaped one of Jigsaw's traps.
In Saw II, she reappeared as one of the individuals trapped in a complex filled with deadly traps. However, it was later exposed that she was working as an undercover agent for Jigsaw, driven by her previous encounter with a trap to become a follower of the killer. Saw III featured her playing a more significant role as an assistant to the ailing Jigsaw. Nonetheless, in the climax of the movie, Jigsaw tests her loyalty and she fails, resulting in her death by gunshot.
Amanda's final appearance in the series, up until now, was in a flashback in Saw VI, which revealed Hoffman's involvement in the events. Therefore, her return in Saw X has been highly anticipated. The fact that her return is being celebrated alongside the reappearance of the iconic costume signals the intention of this new sequel to bring the franchise back to familiar territory, instead of taking a new direction like the previous two installments.
