Summary
The fourth season of Star Trek: Lower Decks unveils an exciting preview, showcasing thrilling DS9 crossovers that transport us to Ferenginar and acknowledge the iconic episode "Move Along Home."Joining us in this highly anticipated season are Leeta and Rom, beloved characters from Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, alongside delightful nods to the unforgettable Ferengi personalities from DS9.
The season 4 trailer of Star Trek: Lower Decks surprised fans at San Diego Comic-Con with even more crossovers from Star Trek: Deep Space Nine. Building on the success of their season 3 crossover episode, the Lower Decks trailer reveals that Ensigns Beckett Mariner and Bradward Boimler will continue their adventures in Star Trek: Strange New Worlds. The trailer showcases Mariner engaging in a barroom brawl with Orions and hints at potential promotions for the Lower Deckers. Excitingly, it also provides a sneak peek of another DS9 crossover, following the highly praised crossover episode in season 3.
The upcoming episode of Star Trek: Lower Decks season 4 takes the USS Cerritos to the planet Ferenginar, as revealed in the latest trailer. On this rainy world of the Ferengi, they encounter Grand Nagus Rom (portrayed by Max Grodénchik) and his Bajoran wife, Leeta (played by Chase Masterson). While it remains uncertain at this point, it is possible that the actors will reprise their roles from Star Trek: Deep Space Nine.
While DS9 showcased multiple episodes that took place on the Ferengi homeworld, it never portrayed a Starfleet delegation embarking on the journey—a gap that Lower Decks is now rectifying. Nevertheless, the trailer for Star Trek: Lower Decks season 4 doesn't merely address this absence but also contains another allusion to DS9. Check it out below:
Star Trek: Lower Decks Season 4 Has Even More DS9 References
In addition to Leeta and Rom, there is also a mention of the infamous Star Trek: Deep Space Nine episode "Move Along Home". In this particular episode, a group of Wadi from the Gamma Quadrant transformed Commander Benjamin Sisko (Avery Brooks) and his senior staff into living game pieces. Towards the conclusion of the Star Trek: Lower Decks season 4 trailer, Rutherford seems to find himself trapped within one of the Wadi's games. Upon reaching a doorway, a young girl opens it and tauntingly urges Rutherford to "move along home", much to his dismay.
Rutherford holds a Betazoid gift box, a pre-wedding present from Star Trek: The Next Generation. This box appeared in the TNG episode "The Bonding" and was voiced by actor Armin Shimerman, who later played Quark in Star Trek: Deep Space Nine. This connection to DS9 adds another layer of reference. With the successful crossover episode in the previous season, it's a wise decision for Lower Decks to further explore Star Trek canon in the upcoming season 4. Mark your calendars for the premiere on September 7, 2023, on Paramount+.
