A player in Diablo 4 recently fulfilled a community request by completely resetting their Paragon board. The cost of doing so amounted to nearly 9 million in-game gold. One of the major criticisms among fans of the ARPG is the difficulty and expense involved in respecing or resetting character progression to experiment with different builds. However, there hasn't been clear information on the specific price for resetting every Paragon Point, which has made discussions on this topic somewhat unclear. With a Diablo 4 player now revealing the cost, it allows for a more detailed conversation on the matter.
In Diablo 4, progression is divided into two distinct level-based structures. From level 1 to 50, players earn Skill Points to invest in both active and passive abilities. After reaching level 50, players start earning Paragon Points that can be used to enhance their character with passive buffs in various ways. By the time players reach level 100 and complete all progression, they will have acquired 58 Skill Points and 225 Paragon Points. While Skill Points can be easily reset, resetting Paragon Points requires individually refunding each slot in the Paragon boards.
Reddit user TSXWave took on the task of calculating the total cost of refunding all Paragon Points. Their Reddit post showcases both 'before' and 'after' screenshots, displaying zero available Paragon Points and 225 available Paragon Points respectively. Initially, they possessed 33,354,444 gold, which decreased to 24,508,119 gold after the refund. Consequently, the total cost amounted to 8,846,335 gold.
Delving deeper into the breakdown, TSXWave discovered that each individual slot refund required 39,317 gold. With 225 slots to be refunded, the cumulative cost spiraled dramatically to nearly 9 million gold. It's worth mentioning that the price remains constant, regardless of how many slots are refunded. However, avid Diablo 4 players understand that resetting the Paragon Points is often necessary when aiming to adopt a new build.
Unfortunately, TSXWave's work failed to simplify the conversation about the high cost of resetting Paragon Points. Many Redditors argue that 9 million gold is a small amount at level 100, while others acknowledge it as substantial but still insignificant compared to re-rolling affixes on gear. However, the consensus is that the individual refunding of each slot is still laborious and frustrating for players.
Blizzard has hardly addressed player frustrations in Diablo 4 regarding build swapping, and there is no indication of any improvements to the system in the near future. Instead, Blizzard has suggested that players create new characters or wait for the start of Diablo 4's seasons to experiment with different builds. As a result, build swapping and experimentation will continue to be inconvenient. It may be worth emphasizing that changing builds should not be easy, cheap, or quick, and perhaps Blizzard should have given more thought to this during development.
Diablo 4 is available now on PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
