The episode, titled "Harvest," aired on July 19, 2023, and brought the Phase 5 series closer to the highly anticipated face-off between Samuel L. Jackson's Nick Fury and Kingsley Ben-Adir's Gravik, the leader of the Skrull resistance who has the ability to shape-shift. Although episode 5 had a more subdued tone compared to the previous intense episodes of Secret Invasion, it still provided significant plot developments. Another character from the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) made a surprise return after debuting in Black Widow in 2021 alongside Scarlett Johansson's Natasha Romanoff, but it wasn't the character that viewers expected.

In episode 5 of Secret Invasion, Gravik progresses the Skrull rebellion's plans by drawing attention to their own base, New Skrullos, in an attempt to convince President Ritson of the United States to launch missiles on Russian territory, thus provoking World War III. He proposes a deal to Fury, believing that Fury will do whatever it takes to protect the innocent Skrulls and humans in New Skrullos. Gravik requests "the Harvest," a collection of the DNA of every superhero who participated in the Battle of Earth during Avengers: Endgame. Fury embarks on a journey to retrieve the Harvest, which is hidden in Gravik's grave in Finland, with the help of a resourceful character introduced in Phase 4's Black Widow.

In the Marvel Cinematic Universe's Black Widow, O-T Fagbenle made his debut as Rick Mason, a former soldier turned international smuggler. He provided various services to black market dealers and armies worldwide. Natasha Romanoff, while working for SHIELD, saved Mason from prison in Cambodia. As a result, he owed her a debt of gratitude and was willing to help her after the events of Captain America: Civil War.

Mason proved his resourcefulness in Black Widow by assisting Romanoff with finding a hiding place, obtaining a vehicle, a helicopter, and even a Quinjet. His character added an interesting dynamic to the story, although it was unexpected that he would return in the MCU. However, in Secret Invasion episode 5, Mason reappeared to aid Nick Fury in reaching Finland and contributing to the battle against Gravik. Once again, he demonstrated his value by providing Fury with a private jet. While Fagbenle's return establishes strong connections to the broader MCU, it wasn't the anticipated cameo many had hoped for in Secret Invasion.

Rick Mason's Cameo Makes Secret Invasion's Quake Snub Worse

Many fans anticipated that the release of Secret Invasion would offer a chance to integrate Marvel Television's Agents of SHIELD. There was hope that Chloe Bennet would reprise her beloved role as Daisy Johnson, also known as Quake, a member of Coulson's SHIELD team and an Inhuman. However, in a recent interview with ScreenRant, Chloe Bennet dismissed the idea of Quake's return in Secret Invasion. She mentioned that although she would be willing to come back, she had not received any communication about it. Despite the desire for Quake's comeback, it seems that the inclusion of any Agents of SHIELD characters in Secret Invasion is highly unlikely.
