Meryl Streep hinted that she might return to play Donna Sheridan in the next Mamma Mia! movie. "I definitely want to be a part of it. I believe people really enjoy it," the 74-year-old actress shared with Deadline during the Cannes Film Festival's opening ceremony at the Grand Théâtre Lumière.

The actress mentioned that she will soon have a meeting to discuss possible ways for her to return to the movie. She is interested to see how producer Judy Craymer has addressed the challenge of her character's death between the first movie in 2008 and the sequel in 2018, Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again.

Streep expressed her curiosity about the solution they have come up with. She mentioned that she has not been informed about the details yet, but she is looking forward to hearing about it in the near future.

Streep’s agent, Kevin Huvane, said, "We’re feeling positive about it."

After starring in Mamma Mia! in 2008, which was based on the 1999 jukebox musical of the same name, Streep had a small role in the sequel. The movie alternated between flashbacks of young Donna (Lily James) and current preparations for the reopening of Hotel Bella Donna following Donna’s passing.

Amanda Seyfried returned as Sophie Sheridan in the movie and had a special moment with Meryl Streep's character, Donna, during her grandson's christening. She also joined Cher for more ABBA songs during the credits.

Other Mamma Mia! actors are also interested in making another film, not just Streep.

Seyfried, 38, shared in June 2020 that every person in the movie would gladly say yes to hanging out together again. The thought of reuniting on an island in Croatia was something they never imagined.

In January 2022, Christine Baranski, who portrayed Donna's former bandmate and wealthy divorcee, Tanya Chesham-Leigh in both films, expressed a similar sentiment.

"If we could turn back time and enjoy the same amount of fun on a Greek island, filming and dining together at night at a charming trattoria or taverna, I don't think anyone would disagree," she shared with Entertainment Weekly.

Although it's unclear how Streep's character would be included in a third film after her character's passing, James, 35, has a suggestion for how she could reprise her role as Donna.

During a January 2023 appearance on The Kelly Clarkson Show, James expressed his interest in being part of the next project. He suggested that it could focus on how The Dynamos formed, which was his idea. James also mentioned that he would be interested in participating in the project.
