Meryl Streep and Martin Short have a surprising chemistry in Only Murders in the Building, but their offscreen relationship is strictly platonic. Short's representative denied any romantic involvement between the 73-year-old actor and Streep, 74, stating, "They are just very good friends, nothing more."
Dating rumors between Short and Streep escalated after they were seen sitting together at the 2024 Golden Globes on Sunday, January 7. Short received his third consecutive nomination for Best Performance by an Actor in a Television Series – Musical or Comedy for his role on the Hulu series, while Streep was nominated in the supporting actress category for her role on season 3. They both left the awards show without winning. The two were previously rumored to be together in December 2023 after hints from theater editor and critic Adam Feldman on social media.
After being married to Don Gummer for 45 years, news broke in October 2023 that they had quietly separated. A representative for the actress confirmed that they had actually been separated for over six years and have chosen to continue living separate lives, despite always caring for each other. The couple tied the knot in 1978 and had four children: Henry, Mamie, Grace, and Louisa. Streep and Gummer kept their relationship relatively private, with their last public appearance together at the 2018 Academy Awards, where Streep was nominated for her role in The Post.

Streep gave insights into the success of her marriage to Gummer in a 2002 interview with Vogue, emphasizing the importance of goodwill, flexibility, and sometimes keeping quiet. On the other hand, Short was married to Nancy Dolman from 1980 until her passing in 2010. Despite their successful careers, Dolman chose to prioritize family over entertainment, and the couple adopted three children together.

A decade after her passing, Short finally opened up about his late wife's battle with cancer and their relationship. In a 2019 interview with AARP: The Magazine, he shared, "Our marriage was a triumph. I still feel like I'm communicating with her all the time. It's like 'Hey, Nan,' you know? I often wonder how she would react to certain decisions, especially regarding our three kids."
He continued to express that he still strongly feels Dolman's presence, stating, "I believe that when people die, they remain close to those who love them. The idea that they're just gone and shouldn't be spoken of is wrong. To me, she's still here."
