Meet the Phenom: A 15-Year-Old Golfer Making Waves in Golf History

Most 15-year-olds are usually concerned about their grades or navigating social situations as a teenager. However, Miles Russell is not your average 15-year-old. Instead of worrying about typical teenage issues, he spent his weekend focused on trying to qualify for a professional golf event and competing against experienced players at the LECOM Suncoast Classic.

On Friday, he made history by becoming the youngest player to make a cut on the Korn Ferry Tour at just 15 years, 5 months, and 18 days old. This broke the previous record set by Gipper Finau back in 2006 at the Utah Championship.

Just qualifying for the weekend was a huge accomplishment for Russell, but he was not finished yet.

He shot a one-under 70 in the third round at Lakewood National Golf Club's Commander course on Saturday. Then, he wrapped up the tournament with an impressive final-round score of five-under 66, making seven birdies in a 10-hole stretch.

Thanks to his strong finish, the Jacksonville Beach native ended up tied-20th at 14-under for the entire tournament.

High school freshman Russell made history by becoming the youngest player since 1983 to achieve a top-25 finish on either the PGA Tour or the Korn Ferry Tour.

Afterwards, Russell shared, "It was an incredible week. I had so much fun. Especially since it was my first time, I might have gotten a few curious glances like, 'Who's that young kid on the range?' But everyone was really friendly and supportive."

“I just try to kind of go with flow and take it as it comes to me, and I’m trying to just stay cool. I was able to hit some good shots in the right moments.”

With his top-25 finish, Russell qualifies to play in the Korn Ferry Tour’s Veritex Bank Championship at Texas Rangers Golf Club in Arlington this week.

Before turning 18, players cannot earn non-member Korn Ferry Tour Points for Special Temporary Membership. This means that Russell will have to wait a few more years before being able to join the tour full-time. However, he can still participate in events if his results allow him to do so.

Russell faced a lot of pressure at the tournament as the youngest player there. However, he remained calm and composed, handling the extra attention with ease.

Even though he struggled at the beginning of his third round, being four-over after three holes, he managed to bounce back and end the day on a strong note.

Russell, the top-ranked boys prospect by the American Junior Golf Association, expressed confidence in his abilities after a good performance. He believes that when he plays well, he can compete with some of the better professionals. This week, he played well and feels that his performance showcased his potential. Finishing strong is always a confidence booster for him.
