The popular 2004 teen comedy Mean Girls has spawned a direct-to-DVD movie sequel, a Broadway musical adaptation, and now a new movie based on the musical. However, fans are eagerly anticipating a sequel featuring the original cast.
Lindsay Lohan, who played the role of the innocent-homeschooler-turned-Plastic Cady Heron in the original film, reunited with Tina Fey at the January 2024 premiere of the new Mean Girls movie. Fey, who wrote the screenplays for both films, is also one of the two stars who reprised her role in the 2024 adaptation.
In addition to Fey and Tim Meadows, who portrayed Ms. Norbury and Principal Duvall, the musical film introduces new talents such as Reneé Rapp as Regina George (originally played by Rachel McAdams) and Angourie Rice as Cady.

Lindsay Lohan (Cady Heron)
"It would be a dream of mine to return and shoot a sequel to Mean Girls," Lohan expressed during an interview on SiriusXM’s Andy Cohen Live in April 2020. "I believe there is definitely momentum heading towards it."
During the same month, she confessed on Lights Out With David Spade: "I held onto [Mean Girls] for a long time. I wanted to return with a Mean Girls 2 with the original cast, collaborate with Tina and the entire crew again, and [director] Mark Waters. That was truly what I desired; I was enthusiastic about it. But ultimately, it's all up to them."

Amanda Seyfried (Karen Smith)
During a conversation with Lohan for Interview magazine in November 2022, Seyfried expressed skepticism about the possibility of a sequel. "But let's face it, a Mean Girls 2 is never going to happen, right?"

Lacey Chabert (Gretchen Wieners)
Chabert, Lohan, and Seyfried joined forces for a Walmart Black Friday ad in November 2023, inspired by Mean Girls. Reflecting on the experience, Chabert expressed that it felt like "stepping back in time" and mentioned her willingness to be part of a potential sequel in the future.
McAdams was the sole member of the Plastics who did not take part in the commercial. She explained to Variety in December 2023 that she had chosen to skip the gig. "Honestly, I wasn't very enthusiastic about doing a commercial," she said. "I have never done commercials before, and it just didn't feel like the right fit for me."
McAdams revealed that she didn't realize that so many of her former costars were participating in the project. She mentioned her interest in joining a Mean Girls reunion and reuniting with her former costars, although she only became aware of their involvement later on.

Daniel Franzese (Damian Leigh)
Franzese said that he and his costars “all want” a sequel while talking to People at the premiere of the 2024 Mean Girls.
“You got to tell the boss lady [Fey] over there. I'm sure [she's] heard it a million times, but she's the gatekeeper, so we're all waiting,” he added.

Lizzy Caplan (Janis Ian)
Caplan expressed her interest in being a part of a Mean Girls sequel, stating that she would be foolish not to join. However, she also noted that it feels like the original film had a complete and satisfying storyline. Additionally, she praised Lohan for her return to acting in Netflix's Falling for Christmas after a hiatus from the screen.
Caplan expressed his enthusiasm for Lindsay Lohan's comeback, stating, "I am so on board with this return of Lindsay Lohan. I'm just pumped. She was such an incredible talent when she was working as a kid and a young adult so I'm happy to see that she's coming back."
