Perry's breakthrough came with his role on the hit sitcom Friends, which ran from 1994 until 2004. Prior to that, he had made appearances on various shows such as Boys Will Be Boys, Beverly Hills, 90210, Growing Pains, and Who's the Boss?. Throughout all 10 seasons of Friends, Perry portrayed the character of Chandler Bing, starring alongside Jennifer Aniston, Courteney Cox, Lisa Kudrow, Matt LeBlanc, and David Schwimmer.

"I firmly believe that I achieved fame in order to avoid squandering my entire life in pursuit of it," he expressed in his memoir, Friends, Lovers, and the Big Terrible Thing, published in 2022. "Attaining fame is essential to comprehend that it is not the solution. And those who have not experienced fame will never truly grasp this."

Perry grappled with substance abuse throughout his career, seeking treatment on two occasions during the 10-year duration of Friends. He later disclosed that he remained sober for only one complete season of the cherished sitcom and declared that his physical appearance served as a reflection of his sobriety.

In his book, he explains that you can trace the progression of his addiction by observing his weight fluctuations throughout the seasons. When he is carrying weight, it is due to alcohol, whereas when he is thin, it is because of pills. Additionally, he mentions that whenever he has a goatee, it signifies heavy pill usage.

During a radio interview in 2022 to promote his memoir, he acknowledged that his struggles made it challenging for him to watch the television show "Friends." He expressed his belief that it was unfair for him to have to battle this disease while his castmates did not. Despite them having the same opportunities and resources as him, he still had to face this ordeal alone. As a result, he is unable to watch the show because it reminds him of his extreme physical thinness and the relentless torment he endured due to his illness. He concludes that this is why he chooses not to watch it, as it brings back painful memories and emphasizes his physical deterioration.

Perry further showcased his talent through his appearances on sitcoms such as Go On and The Odd Couple, as well as his roles in various films, including Fools Rush In, The Whole Nine Yards, and 17 Again. His most recent work was in 2017's The Kennedys: After Camelot, where he portrayed the character of Ted Kennedy, opposite Katie Holmes who portrayed Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis.
