Starfield is centered around the exploration of space, providing gamers with a vast array of astronomical objects to scan and investigate. Prior to landing, players have the freedom to choose their desired landing spot from their ship, enabling them to disembark on any section of a planet or moon. To make the most of these opportunities, it is crucial for players to familiarize themselves with the process of accessing their surface map in order to identify nearby points of interest.

How to Open the Surface Map

Starfield offers two types of maps: the Starmap and the surface map. Players can easily access the Starmap at any time by navigating to the Starmap section in the top left corner of the Pause menu. This interactive map allows gamers to zoom in, analyze planets and moons, and also provides the option to zoom out and explore multiple star systems.

In addition, players can access the surface map after landing on a planet or moon. To access the surface map, players must equip the Scanner and select the Surface Map option.

Players will be able to see any points of interest nearby as well as useful information that they might've surveyed using the Scanner.

Surface Map Features

To enhance the information provided on their surface map, players can utilize the Scanner. By scanning the nearby point of interest markers, gamers can augment their surface map with the name of the location and a percentage indicator denoting the extent of their exploration. If players have thoroughly explored the landmark, a notation stating "Explored" will be displayed alongside the location's name on the surface map.

Gamers can also open the Starmap to check where certain markers are displayed on the planet's surface, so that they can decide which areas are worth visiting or revisiting.
