In Honkai: Star Rail, the turn-based combat system utilizes a range of engaging elements to create exciting and robust battles. Successful outcomes in challenging content depend on team compositions, character roles, and stats like Speed, which determines the action order. However, there are other important aspects within the gameplay.
One of these aspects is the use of Skill Points, which allow players to utilize their characters' skills alongside their Ultimates and Basic Attacks. Skills consume a skill point and provide advantages that Basic Attacks do not. They also require strategic thinking and timing, adding a tactical element to the gameplay of Honkai: Star Rail.
6 Avoid Pairing Skill Point-Heavy Characters
While all characters need to use their skills in some way, there are some characters who rely on them more heavily than others. For instance, Bronya's skill effects only last for one turn. On the other hand, characters like Jing Yuan need to constantly use their skills to earn stacks for the Lightning Lord's damage modifier. Although it is possible to pair these characters together, players may find that they don't have enough skill points for their other characters each turn.
Bronya's signature light cone somewhat alleviates this issue by granting an additional skill point under certain conditions. However, if players don't have access to this light cone, it may be more beneficial to pair skill point-heavy DPS characters like Jing Yuan with support characters like Tingyun, whose skill effects last longer. Bronya can be better utilized with a character like Seele, who can advance forward on her own and use multiple attacks in the same turn thanks to her talent. This allows her to compensate for the skill points used in specific situations.
5 Opt for Characters that Thrive on Basic Attacks Instead of Skills
Some characters greatly benefit from using their skills regularly, while others do not need to use their skill points as often. For example, the Fire Trailblazer has a defensive skill that allows them to taunt enemies, but it is not necessary to use it frequently. Instead, their Basic Attack is more useful for maintaining a party-wide shield and performing AoE or single-target attacks.
In version 1.2, a new character called Blade will be introduced. Blade can enhance his Basic Attack for three turns using his skill. This makes him a great character for managing skill points for other characters, as his enhanced basic attacks only consume one skill point for three turns. However, he does not generate additional skill points through his enhanced basic attacks. Nevertheless, players can look forward to more characters with similar abilities who prioritize enhanced basic attacks, which will help with more efficient skill point management.
4 Equip 4p Passerby of Wandering Cloud on A Healer
Passerby of Wandering Cloud is a great set to use on Abundance characters due to its 2-piece bonus. However, healer characters can also benefit from the 4-piece bonus, as it allows for an additional skill point at the beginning of the battle. This means starting with 4 skill points instead of 3. While this method of generating skill points may not be constant, it can be advantageous in situations where quick-paced content with limited turns is involved, as it provides the option to use skill points on all characters from the first turn if needed.
However, it's important to note that for other Abundance characters like Luocha, wearing only 2 pieces of the relic set and equipping Musketeer of Wild Wheat can offer greater overall advantages throughout the battle.
3 Reserve a Skill Point for a Healer as a Precautionary Measure
When it comes to healer characters, players must prepare themselves to effectively use their healing abilities during challenging content. They can do this by either having their Ultimate ability ready (like Natasha or Bailu) or by saving a skill point specifically for healing after predicting a powerful attack from the enemy. In many cases, boss enemies have distinct animations and mechanics that allow players to plan ahead for a devastating strike. Players need to either prevent the attack (such as by breaking their weakness) or be ready to recover from it.
As a result, players should carefully consider the action order for each turn and ensure that the healer character has the opportunity to use a skill point, especially if their turn follows the enemy's strong attack. In such situations, players can choose not to use a skill point on a supporting character who acts before the healer. Adopting a defensive strategy may be more advantageous than an offensive approach, particularly in content like Forgotten Memory, where players need to avoid any character being knocked down to earn an additional star when completing the battle.
2 Calculate for Situational Uses
Content must be written in English:
While the primary DPS or healer typically require skill points to be effective, it is also important to consider the offensive support character's skill points, especially if their effects last for multiple turns. For example, players should keep track of the buffs provided by characters like Tingyun or Asta to ensure their stacks are maintained, and replenish them when they run out after a few turns.
Another situation arises when using characters like March 7th, who can grant a strong shield to a single character. If players focus on keeping this shield on one character and avoid using it on others, they may not need to use March 7th's skill as often. Instead, they should pay attention to the remaining shield amount and re-apply it when it is fully depleted or significantly low, in order to save skill points.
1 Pay Attention To The Energy Bar for Ultimate
Using an Ultimate early in battle can be highly advantageous for most characters, whether for additional DPS or support utilities. While this may vary for some characters, the standard energy generation is 20 for Basic Attacks and 30 for Skills, allowing characters to access their Ultimate more quickly. Therefore, players with low skill points may want to consider the energy bar levels for each character. They can prioritize using Basic Attacks for characters with almost full energy bars and use skill points on those who need a little more energy to fill their bars.
This approach allows players to effectively activate two Ultimate skills with minimal skill usage in the same turn, instead of using a skill on a character that would benefit greatly from it but activating another character's Ultimate skill would benefit the entire team more. However, this may be less important in cases where a character's Ultimate skill is not immediately necessary. For example, if Jing Yuan already has 9–10 stacks for the Lightning Lord, using both the skill and Ultimate would not benefit the character or the team until after the follow-up attack occurs, allowing Jing Yuan to build stacks again.
