In true Bethesda fashion, Starfield offers players the opportunity to enhance their companions for more effective battles against formidable foes. However, when both players and enemies become more powerful, the standard gear provided to these companions may prove insufficient in defeating mighty monsters. At this point, players may feel compelled to supply their allies with superior weaponry, or perhaps even customize their guns, and outfit them with durable armor for a strategic advantage in any encounter. The only question remaining is: how can players equip companions with a variety of firearms? Here’s the answer.
How to Arm Companions
To equip a specific weapon to a companion in Starfield, players need to engage in a gear trade with them. After completing the trade, they can access the companion's inventory, hover over the desired weapon, and press the Y button to assign it to the companion. It's crucial to ensure that the weapon is present in the companion's inventory for this method to work effectively.
For those who are not familiar, in Starfield, trading weapons is similar to unloading inventory items. To start a conversation with a companion and initiate the trade, players can simply approach them and press the A button. In the dialogue menu, they should then select "Trade Gear." To trade a specific item, players can open their personal inventory by using the left trigger (LB) and press A on the desired item.
How to Fix Companion Not Using Assigned Weapon
If a companion is not utilizing the designated firearm, it signifies that their ammunition supply has been exhausted. To rectify this situation, it is necessary to supply the companion with a minimum of one round of ammunition suitable for that particular weapon. Moreover, it is advised to equip them with an everlasting firearm, such as a Cutter, to guarantee they never experience a bullet shortage again.
Some players have reported that companions can operate any gun with just one box of ammunition, and they will continue to have an unlimited supply of ammo as long as players provide them with at least one round. However, it is important to note that this information has not been officially confirmed yet, as it could potentially be a glitch.
How to Change Companions’ Outfit
Similar to equipping companions with guns, players can also change the outfits of their allies by pressing the Y button while selecting an attire from their inventory.
Players can try to alter their companion's outfit, but there is no assurance that the companion will actually wear the costume given to them. This is because companions have the freedom to make their own clothing decisions. Starfield can currently be played on PC and Xbox Series X/S.
