Opportunity attacks are a prominent feature in Baldur's Gate 3, known to Dungeons and Dragons enthusiasts. This type of attack allows players and their adversaries to react strategically and gain an upper hand.
Novices in Baldur's Gate 3 and unfamiliar with its gameplay mechanics may find themselves succumbing to opportunity attacks frequently. Allowing enemies to land free attacks can prove catastrophic, especially since a single strike can deplete half of a character's health. Consequently, understanding how to evade them effectively can also empower players to employ these attacks tactically.
Avoiding Opportunity Attacks
Look for a red arrow indicating an opportunity attack will occur when moving.
Do not leave melee range of an enemy once in melee range.
Use the disengage action before moving away.
Creatures who have ranged weapons equipped will not provoke opportunity attacks.
A creature who has made an opportunity attack can't make another until its next turn.
Using Misty Step or another teleport spell to get away does not provoke opportunity attacks.
Creatures without reactionary abilities are unable to perform opportunity attacks.
During combat, players should be cautious of a red arrow that signifies the possibility of an opportunity attack when making movements. While players are able to navigate around such a creature within close proximity, they cannot move out of its range without triggering an attack. Those who frequently engage in this behavior will frequently face the consequence of having to reload recent save files and repeat encounters.
There are a few exceptions to this rule. While taking a whole action, the disengage action grants the player the ability to move without facing attacks. If players choose a Rogue as their party member, they can disengage as a bonus action. Additionally, opportunity attacks can be prevented by using teleport spells or disabling the enemy's reactions through negative effects.
Baldur's Gate 3 is currently accessible on PC. The PlayStation 5 version will be released on September 6th, 2023. Meanwhile, a version for Xbox Series X/S is still undergoing development.
