Mass Effect 4: The Ultimate Comeback of the 'Techno-Hippie' You Can't Miss

The absence of 'The Techno-Hippie' in Mass Effect 2 was a significant blow, leaving fans yearning for his return ME4 has the opportunity to right this wrong and reintroduce the beloved stoner Salarian to the franchise

The universe of Mass Effect is highly acclaimed for its intricate details and comprehensive lore, providing answers to a wide range of questions within the game's codex. Whether it's the explanation behind the unlimited ammo of guns in the first game or the captivating and multi-dimensional cast of characters with rich backstories and unique personalities, BioWare has rightfully received praise for their ability to bring the Mass Effect world to life.

Given the dynamic and captivating galactic setting of Mass Effect, it's not surprising that numerous concepts and characters were left on the cutting room floor during the development of each game. Mass Effect 2, in particular, had a significant number of characters that were ultimately discarded, with only a few of their ideas finding their way into the final game. Although some of these cuts were understandable, there is one character whose concept is simply too exceptional to be wasted and should make a triumphant return in Mass Effect 4.

Mass Effect Needs Its Stoner Salarian

His presence on the Normandy would have added a unique dynamic to the crew, as he would have brought not only technological expertise but also a laid-back and absent-minded personality. This would have provided a refreshing contrast to the tension and seriousness of the suicide mission. It's a shame that players will never have the opportunity to witness scenes where the crew discusses the mission's high stakes, with this character present, even if he would likely forget most of the details immediately afterwards.

What makes him particularly intriguing is his age. At 45 years old, he would have been considered incredibly old for a salarian, given their typically short lifespans due to their fast metabolism. The reason behind his extended lifespan could have been attributed to a slower metabolism, adding a comical element to his character. In comparison to other crew members who may be considered middle-aged, the Techno-Hippie would have been ancient within his species.

The potential inclusion of the Techno-Hippie character in Mass Effect 4 could address the previous oversight and provide an opportunity for BioWare to rectify the situation. While the character's absence in Mass Effect 2 may have been due to tonal inconsistencies, there is a possibility that he could be reintroduced in the upcoming game. Given that Mass Effect 4 will follow the "destroy" ending of Mass Effect 3 and feature Liara's involvement, it is likely that the Techno-Hippie's isolationist tendencies could be more plausible, considering the slower pace of travel. However, the feasibility of his inclusion would depend on the state of the galaxy in Mass Effect 4. If the game is set several hundred years in the future, where new travel methods have been developed, and takes place during a relatively peaceful period, the Techno-Hippie's presence may not seem as tonally out of place as it would have been in other parts of the trilogy.

Development for Mass Effect 4 is currently underway at BioWare.
