Highlights
Marvel's Spider-Man 2 builds upon the groundwork of its predecessor, offering bigger and better combat abilities, traversal mechanics, action set pieces, and side missions.
The sequel, Spider-Man 2, shares similarities with Star Wars Jedi: Survivor in terms of building on mechanics and presenting a more expansive and impactful storyline.
Similarly to Jedi: Survivor, Spider-Man 2 grants players access to many of the familiar game mechanics right from the beginning, creating a sense of enthusiasm and validation for any abilities that can be re-unlocked.
Marvel's Spider-Man 2 faced immense pressure prior to its release. Following the success of Marvel's Spider-Man in 2018, fans were eagerly anticipating what Insomniac Games had in store for its next Marvel project. While Spider-Man: Miles Morales was well-received, it didn't quite meet the expectations of a full sequel. Marvel's Spider-Man 2 needed to exceed fan expectations, and according to the majority of fans, it has done just that.
Marvel's Spider-Man 2 is widely regarded as an exceptional sequel that expands upon its predecessors in significant ways. From improved combat abilities and traversal mechanics to exhilarating action sequences and engaging side missions, every aspect of Marvel's Spider-Man 2 is bigger and better than ever before. In this regard, it has successfully drawn inspiration from another highly acclaimed 2023 sequel, Star Wars Jedi: Survivor.
Marvel's Spider-Man 2 Is Another Great 2023 Sequel
When Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order debuted in 2019, it pleasantly surprised players as an exceptional single-player Soulslike adventure game. While it had its flaws, the foundation and mechanics of Fallen Order showed great potential, which could have been further realized in a sequel. Fast forward to April of this year, Star Wars Jedi: Survivor was released, and despite not being flawless, the majority of fans and critics agreed that it was an outstanding follow-up that improved upon its predecessor in almost every aspect.
The story of Star Wars Jedi: Survivor, although it had some shortcomings, felt much grander than its predecessor. It boasted larger and more exciting action sequences and impactful character moments throughout the journey. Moreover, the game expanded on every gameplay mechanic from the original, offering players a plethora of new lightsaber stances, fresh Force powers, a wider range of open-world locations, more user-friendly exploration, improved traversal mechanics, and an abundance of genuinely thrilling collectibles.
Marvel's Spider-Man 2 closely follows the model of Jedi: Survivor, and for the most part, it's an improvement. The previous Spider-Man games laid a solid foundation, but it is Spider-Man 2 that takes it to the next level. With new traversal mechanics, additional powers, the inclusion of two playable Spider-Men, and convenient fast-travel options, Spider-Man 2 surpasses its predecessors. Similarly to Jedi: Survivor, Spider-Man 2 also allows players to start with most of the previously unlocked abilities, while introducing exciting new ones. Any abilities that need to be re-unlocked have been reworked or placed early in the progression tree, ensuring a sense of satisfaction for the players.
Marvel's Spider-Man 2 is available now on PS5.
